COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Beats El Camino in State Volleyball

Golden West kept its hopes for a third consecutive women’s state championship alive by posting a 7-15, 15-6, 16-14, 13-15, 15-10 victory over El Camino in the winner’s bracket quarterfinal of the State tournament at American River College in Sacramento.

Golden West advanced to the 9:30 winner’s bracket semifinal against Cerritos today.

Freshman outside hitter Becki Gehlke had 24 kills and sophomore outside hitter Tracy Schriber had 23 to lead the Rustlers (28-0).

El Camino took a 7-5 lead in the fifth game before Golden West rallied. Debbie Howard served four consecutive points for Golden West, and the Rustlers never trailed again.

In the championship of the Harrah’s Laughlin Classic men’s basketball tournament:

Cypress 68, Arizona Mesa 62--Anthony Livingston had 17 points to lead Cypress (7-2).

In the championship of the Grossmont men’s tournament:

Rancho Santiago 88, East L.A. 79--Rueben Oronoz had 19 points and Fred Amos had 18 points for Rancho Santiago (7-3).

In the championship game of the Cuesta women’s basketball tournament:

Orange Coast 73, Cuesta 49--Tournament MVP Colleen Hatch had 15 points and nine rebounds for OCC (8-0).

In the championship game of the Cypress women’s tournament:

Ventura 59, Cypress 56--Yolanda Hearvey had 21 points and 17 points for Cypress (7-2).

In the semifinals of the College of the Sequoias women’s tournament:

Fresno 96, Golden West 79--Melanie Iwamasa scored 28 points, and Cinnamon Bosco added 23 for Golden West (8-1).
