SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Morningside High’s 68-60 victory over Mira Costa in the championship of the Pacific Shores tournament Saturday night at Mira Costa High was hardly routine.

“We kind of underestimated (Mira Costa),” said Morningside forward Dwight Curry, the tournament’s most valuable player. “They played a hell of a game. Now we know how physical they’ll be when we play them in league.”

Curry was six of six from the field, finishing with 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven steals. The 6-foot-2 senior had 77 points in four tournament games.

Morningside, the defending State Division III champion, raced to a 5-0 lead in the first 1 minute 8 seconds.

But Frank Zeno and Shane Willis combined for Mira Costa’s first 24 points with Zeno scoring the first 11 points to help the Mustangs take a 24-14 lead in the second quarter.

Curry responded with 10 of Morningside’s next 17 points, tying the score, 31-31, on a three-point shot with two minutes left before halftime.
