OUTLOOK
Based on tradition, it would be easy to write this team off early. The Mustangs are 0-30 in league play the past three seasons, and 1-39 in the past four. The only victory came against Orange, which is no longer in the league. But Brewer believes Costa Mesa has a chance at not only winning some league games, but contending for third place. “We’re quick this year, and we have more height for rebounding,” he said. Luu, the point guard, is a four-year starter who averaged 9.1 points and 5.3 rebounds last season. Harber, an all-league tight end in football, averaged 6.3 points last season and gives the Mustangs some muscle inside. The Mustangs’ nonleague schedule includes a Jan. 4 game at Avalon. “I thought that would be a fun game for the kids, to get away and play,” Brewer said. “We’re going over to Catalina Island on a Sunday, playing on Monday night and coming back Tuesday.”
