The Mustangs, ranked third in the county in The Times’ preseason poll, are favored to repeat as league champions. “Everyone thinks this team is going to win league and CIF,” first-year coach McNamee said. “But remember, it’s hard when the kids have to learn all these new things with a new coach.” It’s no wonder expectations are high, considering Costa Mesa lost in overtime, 75-74, to eventual champion Rancho Alamitos in the Southern Section Division III-A semifinals last season. A talented squad returns for McNamee, who spent last season as an assistant for the women’s basketball team at Stanford and the previous six seasons as the head coach at Estancia. DiCamilli, a two-time all-county player and last season’s league MVP, has averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds the last two seasons. Last season, she led the county in scoring, shooting more than 55% from the field and 75% from the free-throw line. Also returning is Robinson, a first-team all-league point guard who averaged five assists. Robinson has moved to off-guard and Kim, a second-team all-league selection, will play the point. At 6 feet 2, Van Sweden gives the Mustangs additional size and rebounding.
