HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Thousand Oaks Girls Edge Newbury Park

Marion Jones scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds Thursday night to lead Thousand Oaks High to a 55-50 Marmonte League victory over host Newbury Park in a girls’ basketball game.

Jones scored 11 points in the first half for Thousand Oaks (14-0, 2-0 in league play).

Kara McKewon, who grabbed 12 rebounds, and Megan Asbury each scored 13 points for the Panthers (9-4, 1-1). Jann Thorpe pulled down 11 rebounds for Newbury Park.

Boosted by a 21-9 advantage in the second quarter, Thousand Oaks led most of the game.

But Jones fouled out with Thousand Oaks ahead, 46-32, at the end of the third quarter and Newbury Park mounted a comeback, pulling to within three points with 1 minute 15 seconds to play.

In other girls’ games:

Village Christian 80, Holy Family 27--The Crusaders (9-4) are off to their best start in the 10-year history of the girls’ basketball program.

Nine victories are the most any Village Christian team has had entering Alpha League play, which starts Tuesday.

Freshman forward Lindy James had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Crusaders, who also got 17 points and five steals from Trisha Palmquist.

Clanci Lehman added 12 points and five steals.

Simi Valley 64, Royal 37--The Pioneers had a 9-0 run in the second quarter to pull away in a Marmonte League game. Lisa Church scored all 12 of her points in the second quarter, in which Simi Valley outscored the Highlanders, 22-5.

Sara Griffin led Simi Valley (6-7, 1-1) with 20 points and 10 steals.

No player for Royal (2-9, 0-2) scored in double figures.

Buena 102, Hueneme 13--Buena used a full-court press to take a 33-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter and rolled from there.

The Bulldogs led at halftime, 52-5, and eclipsed 100 points against Hueneme for the second year in a row. Julie Hardy scored 21 for Buena (6-2, 2-0) and Mikko Giordano added 20.

BOYS

Providence 63, Westside Prep 52--Barry Dabbaghian, one of the area’s top scorers, extended to 11 games his streak of scoring 20 or more points with a 28-point outing in a nonleague victory. Gabriel Comer scored 30 for Westside Prep. Providence is 9-2.

Faith Baptist 95, Buckley 63--Tony Hoggatts had personal-high totals of 27 points and 18 rebounds to lead visiting Faith Baptist (8-6, 1-1) to a Delphic League win.

James DeCarriere added 21 points and seven assists.
