The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team opened California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play Thursday night with a 75-34 victory over Chapman University in Orange.

The Toros (8-5, 1-0 in CCAA play) limited Chapman to only nine points in the first half to set a school record for fewest points given up in a half. Chapman went scoreless for an 11:20 stretch in the first half after leading, 5-4.

All-CCAA forward Denise Slater scored 11 of her game-high 18 points in the first half to lead Dominguez Hills. Dionne Vanlandingham had 14 points and Karee Bonde added 11.

Sophomore guard Melody Earle led Chapman (3-11, 0-1) with 13 points and Deana Harry had a game-high 10 rebounds in only 12 minutes of play.

But the Toro defense, which was ranked 10th going into Thursday’s game having given up an average of 57 points a game, forced Chapman into 25 turnovers.

“If we continue to play defense the way we did tonight we should be very competitive in the conference,” Coach Van Girard said. “Offensively, we took care of the ball about as well as we have all year and that’s something we’ve been working on.”

The Toros play host to Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday night. Cal State L.A. (3-11, 0-1) was defeated by Cal Poly Pomona, 86-47, Thursday night.
