Two-Game Trip Awaits Loyola Women

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team, off to its best start in school history, will play at St. Mary’s on Friday and the University of San Francisco on Saturday.

Both games are at 5:15 p.m.

The Lions (11-3, 2-0 in the West Coast Conference) have won four games in a row and nine of 10. St. Mary’s is 6-8 and 0-2 and San Francisco is 9-5 and 1-1.

Loyola is 8-0 at home and 3-3 on the road.

The Lions opened conference play at home last week with a 74-61 win over Portland and a 71-56 victory over Gonzaga. The win over Portland snapped a 15-game conference losing streak and was the first time the Lions have won a conference opener.

Junior forward Sheri Brown is leading Loyola in scoring with an average of 17.7 points a game and rebounding at 10.9. She had a career-high 18 rebounds against Gonzaga.

Freshman center Amy Lundquist is averaging 10.8 points and 7.9 rebounds, and senior guard Jamie Jesko is averaging a team-leading 3.4 assists.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team will play at Cal State San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Dominguez Hills (9-5, 2-0 in the CCAA) has won all six games against San Bernardino (10-5, 1-1).

In conference games last week, Dominguez Hills defeated Chapman, 75-34, and Cal State Los Angeles, 61-60.

Toro forward Denise Slater scored 35 points and had 18 rebounds in the two games.

San Bernardino is led by guard Kim Young, who is averaging 18.3 points a game. She has scored 52 points in two conference games.

Dominguez Hills will play at Cal State Northridge (4-11) at 7 p.m. Monday in a nonconference game.

Former South Bay players Chris Donnels of the Houston Astros and Sean Berry of the Montreal Expos will be among the instructors at a hitting and pitching clinic for players ages 12 to 18 on Saturday and Sunday and Jan. 30 and 31 at Bishop Montgomery High.

The camp will have sessions from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The cost is $45 for each session.

The clinic is limited to nine participants a session for each instructor.

The Southern California Slo-Two-Pitch Softball Assn. is accepting registration for its men’s winter tournaments from Feb. 13 through March 13 at Wilson Park in Torrance.

The cost is $190 a team.

Teams are guaranteed at least three games in each tournament.

The tournaments will have C, D and recreation divisions.

Many of the top professional bass fishermen in the nation will be instructors during a fishing workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at El Camino College’s Campus Theater in Torrance.

Among the pros scheduled to participate is Larry Nixon, pro bass fishing’s all-time leading money winner.
