BOYS’ SOCCER ROUNDUP : Empire League Duel Ends in 1-1 Deadlock

The boys’ soccer teams from El Dorado and Esperanza played for first place in the Empire League Friday, but a 1-1 tie left nothing settled.

Solid goalkeeping by El Dorado’s Drew Wardell (six saves) and Blayne Leitner (six saves) and Esperanza’s George Allison (10) limited the scoring.

Esperanza (9-2-4, 3-0-1 in league) led at the half after Greg Massey scored on an assist by Mark Alleman.

Kevin Haynes tied the score 12 minutes into the second half after an assist by Dennis Darden for the Golden Hawks (10-4-4, 3-0-1).

In another Empire League boys’ soccer:

Loara 2, Katella 0--Bill Millgan and Armbay Zakaria each scored for Loara (5-5-4, 1-2-1). Katella is 7-8-1, 0-5.

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 5, Buena Park 1--Paul Copeland scored two goals and Chris Fernandez had a goal and two assists for host Sonora (10-4-1, 3-1). Ed Ho had 12 saves for Buena Park (2-7-2, 0-3-1).

Sunny Hills 3, Fullerton 1--Eric Smith had two goals to lead Sunny Hills (7-6-1, 3-0). Carlos Paicos scored a goal for Fullerton (0-2-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 0, Bolsa Grande 0--Neil Antis made 11 saves for Bolsa Grande (2-6-2, 1-4-1). La Quinta is 3-7-1, 1-4-1.

Pacifica 3, Garden Grove 2--Andy Anderson scored twice and Vince Murry scored once for visiting Pacifica (8-5-1, 5-1-1). Donny Searcy and Tom Hastings scored for Garden Grove (4-1-2 in league).

Santiago 2, Kennedy 1--Senior Rafael Mosqueda, who has 18 goals this season, took the ball almost 90 yards down the field with one minute remaining to win the game for host Santiago (8-2-1, 6-0). Anthony Rodriguez scored the other goal for the Cavaliers. Ryan Bean scored Kennedy’s lone goal.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 3, Valencia 1--Eddy Escobar scored two goals, and Jose Sanchez scored another to give 10th-ranked Anaheim (11-2-2, 3-0-1) a 3-0 lead at the half. Valencia fell to 1-5-3, 1-1-1.

Brea-Olinda 2, Savanna 0--Brandon Wheeler and Danny Johnson scored for Brea-Olinda (8-2-2, 2-O-1)). Goalie Jose Salvador had 15 saves for Savanna, which drops to 0-3-0 in league.

Magnolia 1, Western 1--Fernando Rodriguez scored for visiting Magnolia (3-5-5, 1-1-2). Eric Larra scored one goal and Sean Verne had 12 saves for Western (8-3-2, 0-1-2).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 4, Laguna Beach 2--Porfirio Henriquez scored three goals to lead Estancia. Chris Ornelas and Justin Young each scored once for Laguna Beach (5-5-2, 0-2).

Laguna Hills 7, Century 0--Jamie Miller and Ryan Boyajian each had two goals to lead Laguna Hills (5-5-7, 1-0-2). Mike Perez had six goalie saves for Century (3-5-2, 1-3-0).

Trabuco Hills 3, Costa Mesa 0--Tom Phill scored two goals for host Trabuco Hills (7-6-1, 2-0-1). Costa Mesa is 2-6-1, 1-2.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 2, University 0--Juniors Jason Boyce and Eric Olson scored for host Corona del Mar (16-0-3, 6-0-1). Goalie Mike Olivien had 15 saves for University.

Newport Harbor 1, Irvine 1--John Clark scored the tying goal for Irvine (0-4-1). Jim Hicks had a goal for Newport Harbor (4-5-5, 2-0-2).

Saddleback 2, Tustin 0--Jose Rodriguez had two second half goals to lead Saddleback (10-4-1, 3-1-1). Dwayne Stokes had 12 saves for Tustin (5-8, 2-4).

Santa Margarita 1, Woodbridge 0--Dan Sparks scored with 15 minutes left in the first half for top-ranked Santa Margarita (14-0-3, 4-0-2). Matt Reis had three saves for the Eagles. Jason Hause had five saves for Woodbridge (7-4-3, 3-2-1).

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 3, Dana Hills 1--Kyle Berger had two goals for visiting Capistrano Valley (12-4-2, 2-1). Senior John Brull got the other goal for the Cougars. Dana Hills drops to 0-2-1 in league.

Mission Viejo 1, El Toro 1--Jacob Zakhar scored the tying goal for El Toro (5-3-6, 0-1-2). Patton Toffer had Mission Viejo’s goal.

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 4, Westminster 1--Scott Holmes, Chad Lawson, Cesar Hernandez and Bradley Walker each scored for Ocean View (13-3-1, 4-1-1), the fifth-ranked team in the county. Westminster is 1-10-2, 0-8.

Santa Ana 1, Fountain Valley 0--Antonio Lagunas scored the winning goal for Santa Ana (15-1-2, 6-0-2).
