ROUNDUP : CLU Prevails, 57-54, Despite Poor Shooting

Despite shooting only 36% from the field, the Cal Lutheran men’s basketball team beat visiting Pomona-Pitzer, 57-54, on Saturday night to remain undefeated in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Kingsmen (12-3, 4-0 in conference play) made 21 of 59 shots and only 12 of 20 free throws, but the Sagehens shot only 38% from the field and 65% from the line.

Damon Ridley led Cal Lutheran with 11 points. Ruppert Sapwell grabbed 10 rebounds.

In other men’s basketball games:

Canyons 82, Bakersfield 74--G.C. Marcaccini had season highs with 33 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Cougars (14-10, 2-0) to a Western State Conference South Division victory.

Glendale 84, West Los Angeles 65--Reserve guard Will Burr scored 25 points to lead the Vaqueros (12-10, 1-1) in a WSC North Division game. Kenny Collins added 19 points and 13 assists.

Reece Stoval led West Los Angeles with 35 points.

Antelope Valley 96, Victor Valley 75--Akili Carter led all players with 24 points and John Puckett added 18 as the host Marauders ran past Victor Valley (6-14, 3-4) in a Foothill Conference game.

Antelope Valley (15-7, 4-3) held a 54-33 advantage on the boards as Carter and Darnell Cherry pulled down eight rebounds each. Danny Prince added 11 points and nine assists for Antelope Valley.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Montclair Prep 40, Pasadena Poly 39 (OT)--Greg Rosen’s two free throws with 48 seconds left in overtime proved to be the difference as the Mounties, ranked No. 1 in Division V, won a nonleague game at Pasadena Poly.

Pasadena Poly (12-4) sent the game into overtime when Roger West connected on an NBA-range three-point shot at the buzzer. Freshman Akil Anderson led Montclair Prep (12-5) with 13 points and five assists. Rosen added six points and 10 rebounds, and Les Sweet contributed four points and nine rebounds for the Mounties.

Campbell Hall 66, Faith Baptist 53 (OT)--The visiting Vikings outscored the Contenders, 13-0, in overtime in a Delphic League game. Rowan Pearson led Campbell Hall (8-8, 4-1) with 20 points and 10 rebounds and guard C.J. Thompkins scored 14 points. Viking forward Simeon Woodall scored 11 points but missed two free throws with three seconds left and the score tied, 53-53. Tony Hoggats led Faith Baptist (10-8, 3-3) with 19 points.

Kern Valley 66, Paraclete 52--Brenda Carberry scored 16 points, but it was not enough as Paraclete (7-10, 4-3) fell behind, 20-5, after one quarter and could not catch up in a High Desert League game at Kern Valley.

Tony Sievers led Kern Valley (7-9, 4-2) with 22 points. Brian Lathrop contributed 10 points for Paraclete.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Bakersfield 74, Canyons 68--Natasha Kliewer scored 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds against the Cougars in a Western State Conference South Division game.

Kate Stoll, with 20 points, and Karen Sklar, with 16, led the scoring for Canyons (10-13, 4-4), which held a three-point lead with three minutes to play but then turned the ball over four consecutive times.

Ventura 91, Compton 45--Pirate center Nicole Ellis had 29 points and 12 rebounds in a WSC North Division game, and forward Jennifer Wells added 14 points for visiting Ventura (16-4, 8-0), which took a 31-point halftime lead.

Antelope Valley 84, Citrus 40--Bernice Atkinson scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and teammate Aimee Grimes added 12 points and 16 rebounds as Antelope Valley (11-10, 3-2) routed visiting Citrus (2-14, 0-5) in a Foothill Conference game.

Five Antelope Valley players scored in double figures as Sasha Garrison contributed 18 points, Christi Huff 15 and Vatrice Fletcher 12.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Rio Mesa 50, Oxnard 31--Briana Konongataa scored 12 points and Debbie Douglas added 11 to lead host Rio Mesa in a Channel League game. Alicia Sims had 11 points and teammate Lauren Newman pulled down 11 rebounds for Oxnard, which connected on only 10 of 58 field-goal attempts.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Buena 2, Oxnard 0--Jeff Saucedo and Jose Melgoza each scored in a Channel League match, and Juan Melgoza assisted on both goals for visiting Buena (9-1-2, 4-1-1).
