BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Liberty Christian Hangs On to Beat St. Margaret’s

Two free throws by guard Toby Curto with seven seconds remaining clinched Liberty Christian’s 65-61 victory over St. Margaret’s in an Academy League game Friday at St. Margaret’s.

Four players scored in double figures for the Minutemen (12-4, 4-1 in league) to offset a 31-point, 14-rebound performance by St. Margaret’s Damian Raibon.

Curto scored 21 points, Jason Trippet 15, and Mike Bahnsen 14 for Liberty Christian. Dave Vacarro added 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Minutemen. St. Margaret’s is 10-6, 4-1.

In the Century League:

El Modena 65, Villa Park 44--Aaron Aguilera had 14 points and 15 rebounds and Tyler Wood had 14 points for visiting El Modena (11-8, 5-1). Chip Bernards had 11 points for Villa Park (6-13, 2-4).

Santa Ana Valley 50, Canyon 37--Anthony Porter had 18 points to lead host Santa Ana Valley (4-2). Steve Whelan had 13 points for Canyon (1-5).

Orange 53, Foothill 49 (OT)--With 18 seconds left in overtime, Nestor Cabalo made two free throws to put it out of reach for Orange (10-10, 4-2).

In the Express League:

Claremont 60, Norwalk Pioneer Baptist 55--Gavin Watson had 40 points and 13 rebounds to lead Claremont (4-8, 2-7). Steve Kimble had a triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for Claremont.

Heritage Christian 105, Downey Calvary Chapel 58--Ryan Drabek had 25 points and Steve Acheson had 24 points for Heritage Christian (12-1, 9-0).

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 42, Sunny Hills 25--Alex Tolentino scored 21 points for host Buena Park (10-10, 3-3).

Fullerton 59, La Habra 44--Chad Murray had 16 points and Tim Vanderberg had 11 points and four steals for Fullerton (13-8, 4-2).

Sonora 64, Troy 50--Chris St. Clair had 21 points to lead Sonora (18-3, 6-0), the sixth-ranked team in the county. Greg Abbott and Mark Stenner each had 14 points for Troy (9-11, 2-4).

In the Olympic League:

Brethren Christian 57, Ontario Christian 56--Seth Carey and Scott Thomas each scored 14 points for visiting Brethren Christian (14-7, 8-0).

Capistrano Valley Christian 61, Calvary Chapel 34--Jeff Jennings scored 15 points and Troy Rodarmel added 14 points to lead Capistrano Valley Christian (16-3, 6-2).

Whittier Christian 72, Cerritos Valley Christian 55--Jeff Rutter scored 26 points, including a school-record seven three-pointers, for visiting Whittier Christian (10-9, 5-3).
