HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : 3rd-Quarter Surge Propels San Fernando, 73-54

Guard James Wells made three consecutive three-point baskets late in the third quarter to help San Fernando High to a 73-54 victory over Wilson in a City Section 3-A Division first-round playoff victory Wednesday at San Fernando.

The Tigers outscored the Mules, 22-9, in the third quarter to take a 57-38 lead.

Jerome Elliott led San Fernando (15-7) with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Barry McWright added 12 points, and Miguel Martinez had nine points and 10 rebounds.

In other boys’ City Section first-round games:

Locke 90, Chatsworth 57--The Saints opened with a 22-2 run in the 4-A game. Glenn Lyles led Locke (23-9) with 18 points. Marcel Wilson scored 17 for Chatsworth (15-11).

Banning 60, Canoga Park 50--The Pilots used a 15-2 run midway through the third quarter to put away the Hunters in a 3-A game. Glenn Davis led Canoga Park (10-11) with 23 points.

Crenshaw 115, Van Nuys 49--Kris Johnson, formerly of Montclair Prep, scored a game-high 30 points to lead top-seeded Crenshaw (21-2) at home. Van Nuys finished 8-14.

Garfield 55, Birmingham 52--Senior guard Alex Gomez scored a game-high 30 points to lead Garfield in a 3-A game at home. Birmingham finished 16-8.

In a boys’ Southern Section Division I-A makeup game:

Chino Hills Ayala 54, Hueneme 52--Hueneme (16-9), the second-place team from the Channel League, was eliminated at Ayala. Hueneme had defeated Antelope Valley, 61-58, in a first-round game Friday but was forced to play Ayala before moving into the second round because Ayala had played its first-round game in the wrong division.

CITY SECTION GIRLS

North Hollywood 58, El Camino Real 37--Anna Celaya scored 15 of her 17 points in the first half for the Huskies (19-6) in a first-round 4-A Division win. Darvena Merritt added 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Dinaberg led El Camino Real (10-8) with 10 points.

Kennedy 52, Banning 51--Shaneya Harris scored Kennedy’s last 10 points, including two free throws with 20 seconds left, in a 4-A first-round game. Harris had 33 points and 12 rebounds.

Dorsey 58, Van Nuys 54--Jenny Chi scored 13 points for the Wolves (11-8) in a 4-A Division first-round game.

Monroe 48, Garfield 41--Viking center Dimara Haymond had 17 points and 21 rebounds to lead host Monroe (11-3) in a first-round 3-A Division game. Viking guard Deanna Nakamura made four three-point shots and had 14 points, 10 assists and six steals.

Taft 40, Birmingham 23--Julie Kawamoto scored 14 points for Taft and Jocelyn Correll added 12 in the 3-A first-round game.

Chatsworth 59, Lincoln 54--Allison Naka scored 20 points to lead the host Chancellors to a 3-A first-round victory.

SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS

Westlake 47, Savanna 38--Marlee Organ scored 17 points and Tracy Young added nine to lead host Westlake (15-13) in a Division II-A second-round game.
