Mira Costa High Names Morrow Football Coach

Don Morrow, who coached South Torrance High’s football team to three league titles in four seasons, has been named coach at Mira Costa. Morrow’s appointment was approved Wednesday night by the Manhattan Beach Unified School Board.

Morrow, a science teacher, said he will continue to work at South until the end of the school year in June. He replaces Bill Lysle, who resigned after the 1992 season. Lysle coached Mira Costa to a two-year record of 7-12-1.

Morrow said it was a difficult decision to leave South, where he guided the football team to a four-year record of 24-21. The Spartans have won or shared the Pioneer League title in each of the past three years. They were 8-4 last season, including 1-1 in the Southern Section playoffs.

“South is a good place to work,” Morrow said. “The school has been very successful athletically, and you get good kids to teach in the classroom. I hope we can be as successful (at Mira Costa).”

In moving to Mira Costa, Morrow said he was attracted by the prospect of working with Manhattan Beach School Supt. Jerry Davis, who was the principal at Redondo High when Morrow worked there in the 1980s, and with Mira Costa Principal Darlene Gorey, who was a teacher at Aviation High when Morrow was a student there in the late 1970s.
