BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Sipkovich’s Two-Hitter Helps Marina Advance

Jim Sipkovich pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Marina beat Newport Harbor, 5-0, in one quarterfinal of the Pride of the Coast Tournament Monday at Newport Harbor.

Sipkovich (2-1) walked two and hit a batter for Marina (9-6), which plays Brea-Olinda at 2 p.m. today at Estancia.

Kevin Sullivan had two doubles, scored one run, and drove in two for Marina. Nick Damato had a triple and a single, scored a run and drove in another for Marina.

In other quarterfinal games:

Brea-Olinda 12 Estancia 2--John Stoddard had two hits and two runs batted in for Brea-Olinda.

Corona del Mar 11, Katella 8--Jim Huston had three hits and four RBIs including a two-run single in the Sea Kings’ six-run third. Jeremy Goldstein’s two-run single gave Corona del Mar (6-6) a 7-6 lead in the third. The Sea Kings, who scored six runs in third with two outs, had only six hits but also received 10 walks. Corona del Mar plays host to Rancho Alamitos at 2 p.m. today in the other semifinal.

Rancho Alamitos 6, Huntington Beach 5 (10 innings)--With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Jeff Byrd singled home Ed Taylor from third with the winning run for the Vaqueros (9-2). Byrd had four hits and three RBIs and Marshall Brown had four hits, two stolen bases and two RBIs for Rancho Alamitos.

In the consolation round of the Pride of the Coast tournament:

El Modena 13, Costa Mesa 0--Matt Ritze pitched a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts and hit a three-run home run for El Modena (2-9).

Orange Lutheran 8, Calvary Chapel 2--Jeff Courvoiser had two hits and three runs scored and Eric Glessner had two hits and two RBIs for Orange Lutheran (7-4).

In the quarterfinals of the Santa Ana Easter tournament:

Santa Ana 4, Saddleback 3--Jose Mata’s single scored Jose Aguillar with one out in the seventh and Matt Chavez pitched a complete game four-hitter for host Santa Ana (3-9), which plays Diamond Bar at 3 p.m. today at Rancho Santiago College. Diamond Bar beat Foothill, 8-6.

Mission Viejo 10, Laguna Hills 5--Eric Fielding had four hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs and Jeff Carr had two hits and two RBIs for Mission Viejo, which plays Villa Park at 1:30 p.m. today at Santa Ana Valley.

Villa Park 6, Valencia 5--Matt Brady’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh drove in the tying and winning runs for host Villa Park (6-6).

In the consolation round of the Santa Ana Easter tournament:

Buena Park 3, Cerritos Gahr 0--Afredo Garcia (4-2) pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts for Buena Park (7-4).

Pacifica 14, Trabuco Hills 9--Pacifica capitalized on 11 Trabuco Hills errors, and Josh Dean pitched six innings to get the victory for Pacifica.

In the quarterfinals of the Anaheim Lions tournament:

La Quinta 12, Fullerton 5--Joe Linck had two hits including a double and drove in three runs and Bobby Ruiz and had two hits and scored three runs for La Quinta (12-2), which plays Garden Grove at Glover Stadium at 4 p.m. today.

Garden Grove 3, Sunny Hills 2 (8 innings)--Manuel Vargas went three for three and scored two runs to lead Garden Grove (7-3-1) at Brookhurst Park. Sunny Hills is 9-5.

Sonora 17, Dana Hills 2--Joey Gomez had four hits, three RBIs and a two-run home run and Junior Rodriguez had two hits and four RBIs for Sonora (8-5) at Glover Stadium. Freshman David Miller pitched 6 1/3 innings to earn the victory for the Raiders, who advanced to play Kennedy a 7 p.m. semifinal tonight at Glover Stadium. Kennedy tied Canyon, 3-3, but the Fighting Irish advance on a tiebreaker.

In the consolation round:

Western 12, Los Amigos 1--Brian Norris went five for five with three RBIs to lead Western (8-5-1).

Laguna Beach 2, Anaheim 0--Pat Wood was two for three with a stolen base and an RBI for Laguna Beach (6-6).

Troy 4, Savanna 2--Bryan Burchit had two hits with an RBI for Troy (10-1-1).

In first round of the Coachella Valley tournament:

Capistrano Valley 15, Susanville Lassen 3 (5 innings, mercy)--Greg Payne had three hits and four RBIs and Dominic Lombardi had three hits and three RBIs for Capistrano Valley (8-3) at the College of the Desert.

In the first round of the Santa Ynez tournament:

Whittier Christian 5, Santa Ynez 2--Ila Borders pitched a five-hitter and drove in the go-ahead run with a single for the Heralds (5-6). Borders struck out eight and walked two.

In the Las Vegas El Dorado Tournament:

Los Alamitos 10, Tustin 10 (time limit)--Shane Gorhan had two hits and three RBIs as Los Alamitos rallied for nine runs in the seventh to tie the score, 10-10. Bill Blackledge had two hits and three RBIs for Los Alamitos (6-7-1). Los Alamitos also beat Clark (Nev.), 7-2, Monday.

Fountain Valley 7, Chula Vista 6--Pitcher Chris Ponchik had a two-run double in the first inning for Fountain Valley and pitched the first four innings for the victory for Fountain Valley (9-4).

In the second round of the championship bracket of the Babe Herman tournament:

University 6, Westlake 1--Eric Wei hit a bases-loaded triple in the third inning to drive in three as University improved to 10-3-1.

In the North Santa Barbara Tournament:

Santa Maria St. Joseph’s 7, Capistrano Valley Christian 6--David Lambert hit a grand slam, his fourth home run of the season, for Capistrano Valley Christian (3-7).

In the Don Lugo tournament:

Westminster 6, Hesperia 4 (8 innings)--Chris Denningham had three hits for Westminster (9-4).

In the Pomona Elks tournament:

Ocean View 5, Rosemead 2 (8 innings)--Jay Yamamoto had a two-out RBI single in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie for Ocean View. Steve Rivera and Justin Brunett also had RBI singles in the inning for Ocean View (10-4).
