College: Golden West
Sport: Swimming
Class: Freshman
Guijarro travels great distances in the pool for Golden West each meet. He normally swims in the 200, 500 and 1,650-yard freestyles. But that distance is nothing compared to the trip he made to get to Golden West.
Guijarro came to Huntington Beach from Caracas, Venezuela. He had heard about the program through a club coach there. Guijarro’s impact has been significant for Golden West as he proved last weekend in the South Coast Conference finals.
He won three individual events and was part of three winning relay teams as Golden West dominated the competition. Guijarro set conference records in the 200 freestyle (1:40.28) and the 500 freestyle (4:33.19). He also won the 1,650 (16:27.27).
He was the anchor of the 400 medley relay and the 400 and 800 freestyle relays.
Other top performers:
Saddleback’s David Beck won the Orange Empire Conference one-meter diving competition with a 445.80 points. He was third in the conference’s three-meter competition.
Jason Parsons of Orange Coast was nine for 13, hit three home runs, scored seven runs and drove in 10 in three games.
Eric Stevens of Cypress was six for 14 with two home runs and drove in six runs as the Chargers won three games.
Rancho Santiago’s Steve Thobe was seven for 11, including a grand slam, and had nine RBIs. He also got two saves and a victory in three relief appearances.
