PREP ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Upsets First-Place Dana Hills in Boys’ Tennis

Mater Dei’s Paul Kerwin beat Eric Lundblad of Dana Hills to help the Monarchs to a 10-8 upset of the first-place Dolphins in a South Coast League boys’ tennis match Friday at Dana Hills.

In the decisive set, Kerwin fought off two match points before beating Lundblad, 7-6 (7-0 in the tiebreaker). Mater Dei (4-4 in league) won all its singles sets with Brett Hankey winning, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, and Miles Simon, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Dana Hills is 6-2.

In another South Coast League match:

Capistrano Valley 11, El Toro 7--Andy Nikolich and Sandy Vanderputt swept in No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 7-5, 6-1, for Capistrano Valley (8-7, 5-3).

In the Olympic League:

Brethren Christian 9, Sierre Madre Maranatha 9 (76-74)--Mark Stump and Laurian Demian swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Brethren Christian (2-9, 2-5).

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Anaheim 10, Savanna 8--Eric Berryman and David Vu swept at No. 2 doubles for visiting Anaheim (1-7 in league). Savanna is 1-7 in league.

Brea-Olinda 16, Magnolia 2--Alex Tiquia and Nolan Chang swept at No. 1 doubles to lead Brea-Olinda (15-3, 8-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 17, Century 1--Joseph Redford swept at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, to lead host Laguna Beach (13-5, 7-1).

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 16, Newport Harbor 2--Host Corona del Mar (17-1, 12-0) won eight of nine sets in singles and doubles to remain in first place, one match up on University.

University 17, Irvine 1--Jason Meyers swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0, to lead visiting University (15-2, 11-1).

Saddleback 9, Santa Margarita 9 (Saddleback won on games, 76-74)--An Nguyen swept in No. 1 singles for Saddleback, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. Saddleback is 8-10, 4-8.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 14, Cypress 4--Steve Dawson swept at No. 1 singles to lead El Dorado (5-14, 2-7).

Esperanza 16, Katella 2--Mike Burgess swept at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for Esperanza (14-5, 6-3).

In Garden Grove League girls’ swimming:

Los Amigos 96, Rancho Alamitos 70--Holly Baldwin won the the 200 freestyle (2:28.54) and 500 freestyle (6:57.14), Amanda Douglas won the 200 IM (2:45.68) and 100 butterfly (1:21.39), Lisa Atonda won the 50 free (30.63) and 100 backstroke (1:23.54) and Elaine Kato won the 100 free (1:09.64) and 100 breaststroke (1:24.97) for Los Amigos.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Villa Park 121, Fullerton 20--Kevin Bobzien took first in the 100 freestyle (51.34) for host Villa Park.

Cypress 98, Canyon 59--Micheal Kerr won the 500 freestyle in 4:59.4 for Canyon (6-6).

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Canyon 91, Cypress 77--Michelle Maloney won 50 (26.9) and 100 (59.9) and Lisa Hess won the 100 butterfly (1:01.2) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.6) for host Canyon (7-4).

Brea-Olinda 87, Walnut 83--Sachi White won the 200 freestyle in 1:59.47 and the 500 freestyle in 5:14.80 to lead Brea-Olinda (11-0).

Villa Park 127, Fullerton 21--Senior Dara Ravani, who continues to make drops in her times, won the 100 backstroke (1:04.51), barley missing the Southern Section qualifying. Villa Park is 10-1, 5-0.

Mater Dei 112, Santa Margarita 54--Kim Wilson won the 50 freestyle in 26.31 and 100 freestyle in 57.93 to lead Mater Dei (5-5-1).
