The Franklin High baseball team advanced to the City Section 3-A semifinals with hopes of advancing to the championship game tonight at Dodger Stadium.

But the Panthers, champions of the Northern Conference, lost to South Gate, 7-0, on Tuesday.

Franklin, under Coach Rick Campbell, defeated Huntington Park, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. Sophomore left-hander Jeff Deno pitched a complete game for the Panthers (19-4).

Margarito Casillas of Hoover finished second in the boys’ 3,200-meter event at last weekend’s Southern Section Masters Meet and is the second qualifier entering the State meet, which begins Friday at Cerritos College.

Casillas, a senior who won the State cross-country championship last fall, finished the 3,200 in 9 minutes 4.12 seconds.

Martin Hilke of Crescenta Valley finished sixth in the high jump with a mark of 6-feet-6.

Nada Kawar of Crescenta Valley finished third in the girls’ shotput with a mark of 44-6 3/4.

Registration has begun for the Spartan Basketball Camp run by La Canada boys’ Coach Tom Hofman. Boys’ sessions begin June 21. A girls’ session will be staged in July.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Registration is open for Vaquero basketball camps run by Glendale men’s Coach Brian Beauchemin that will take place June 28-July 2 and Aug. 2-6 at Glendale College.

The camps are open to boys and girls ages 8 and older.

Mark Loretta, a former standout at St. Francis High, was named first-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball magazine for his performance this season at Northwestern.

Loretta, a 6-foot, 175-pound shortstop, was named Big Ten Conference player of the year after batting .408 with three homers and 34 runs batted in. Loretta, an outstanding defensive player, also stole 20 bases.

Four Occidental athletes earned All-American honors for their performances last weekend at the NCAA Division III track and field championships at Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio.

Junior Becky Kopchick finished second in the 5,000 with a time of 17:18.40. She finished third in the 3,000 in 10:01.50.

Senior Konstatine Kinderich finished third in the men’s 1,500 in 3:50.59, and senior Jose Garcia placed seventh in the 5,000 in 14:51.90

Junior Gunnar Miller was fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.88 meters.

Three men and three women have been selected as finalists for the Occidental Senior Scholar-Athlete awards, which will be presented June 11.

The men’s finalists include Phil Engebretsen (basketball), Marc Krock (football) and Gary Little (football and track).

Women’s finalists include Claire Bradley (swimming), Stephanie Francis (basketball and softball) and Sarah Wald-Hopkins (swimming).

Criteria for the awards include a minimum grade-point average of 3.2, participation in intercollegiate athletics and written recommendations from faculty and athletic department representatives.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Jeff Deno, Franklin--Deno, a sophomore left-hander, pitched a complete game as Franklin defeated Huntington Park, 2-1, in the City Section 3-A quarterfinals.

Deno gave up four hits and struck out five.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Jennifer Dalton, Arizona--Dalton, a former three-sport standout at Glendale High, played shortstop for Arizona in the Wildcats’ 1-0 victory over UCLA in the NCAA softball World Series at Oklahoma City.

Dalton will be joined at Arizona next season by Hoover pitcher Nancy Evans.

MISCELLANY

A triathlon that includes a three-mile run, 10-mile bike ride and 400-meter swim will be staged July 25 at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena. The event includes individual men’s and women’s competitions and men’s and women’s mixed relays. Information: (818) 585-2324. . . .
