Peninsula Falls to Santa Barbara in Division I Final : Tennis: In a rematch of the 1992 final, the powerhouse Dons get a boost from Southern Section singles champion Alex Decret to win their 11th title.

The Santa Barbara High boys’ tennis team won its 11th Southern Section championship Wednesday, defeating Peninsula, 11-7, in a rematch of the 1992 final at the Knowlwood Tennis Club in Montecito.

The Division I title was the Dons’ sixth in a row and eighth in nine seasons. Santa Barbara is now he winningest tennis program in Southern Section history. The Dons and Santa Monica each had won 10 titles before Wednesday.

Alex Decret, the Southern Section singles champion, won all three of his singles sets--the only singles victories for Santa Barbara.

“Stopping Decret was big for us and we couldn’t do it,” Peninsula co-coach Tom Cox said.

Decret beat 1992 Southern Section champion Loren Peters, 6-2, in the featured match. Decret also beat Peters on Saturday to win the Southern Section singles championship.

“I think that (Decret) was our real catalyst,” said Santa Barbara Coach Jack Trigueiro, who completed his 28th year at the school. “He played extremely well. He was very much into the competition the whole match.”

Decret, a senior, also defeated Kyle Spencer, 6-2, and Dennis Chang, 6-2.

“In my mind, I didn’t think it would be crucial to win all three (singles matches), but you never know about the lineups,” Decret said. “Playing at home was a huge advantage.”

The Dons won eight of nine doubles sets, led by the teams of Nathan Jackmon-Brian Corlett and Tom Flynn-Nat Devorzon, who combined to go 6-0.

Santa Barbara, which had a 116-match winning streak snapped this season by Rio Mesa, finished 23-1. The Panthers, who lost to the Dons, 13-5, in the 1992 final, finished 24-1.
