SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

San Pedro High pitcher Petrina Martinez said her outing against Banning on Thursday was mediocre at best.

But Martinez’s play was more than enough to help the Pirates shut down Banning, 8-0, in the City Section 4-A Division final at UCLA.

Martinez (14-1) pitched a three-hitter for her sixth shutout.

The junior put the Pacific League rival Pilots down in order four times and retired the final nine batters as San Pedro cruised to its second consecutive 4-A title in a rematch of 1992 title game.

Martinez, who struck out 10 and pitched a one-hitter against Banning during league play, had six strikeouts on Thursday.

“I knew not to take them lightly,” Martinez said. “You never know what’s going to happen. I pitched good enough to win, but I still could have pitched a lot better. I wasn’t satisfied.”

The season couldn’t have ended on a much higher note for the Pirates.

San Pedro (26-3), playing in its fourth final in six seasons, extended a 28-game winning streak over the past two seasons against City competition.

Thursday’s victory also marked the fifth City softball title for top-seeded Pirates.

San Pedro, which beat Banning, 2-1, in 13 innings the 1992 championship game, also won titles in 1976, 1977 and 1979.

The Pirates are 6-0 against Banning the past two seasons; they beat the Pilots three times this year, including 1-0 and 8-0 victories during league play.

Martinez was the winning pitcher in all six games against Banning.

“I think we played a lot better this year than last year,” Martinez said. “Since we defeated them last time, I knew they really wanted it as much as we did.”

San Pedro was limited to only two hits in its 1-0 semifinal victory against Carson, but pounded out 11 hits and tagged Pilot starter Ompa McKenna (15-5) for five runs in the first inning.

“I thought we had a pretty good chance, but I just don’t know. . . . I wasn’t doing good,” McKenna said.

She had five wild pitches and walked Victoria Brucker and Michael Ahumada to start the game.

Diane Marshall advanced the runners to second and third with a bunt. The next five batters reached base on four singles and a walk.

Amie Roberts knocked in Brucker and Ahumada with a hit up the middle to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

Lisa Hebert and Michelle Spanjol also delivered run-scoring singles, and another run scored on a wild pitch. San Pedro sent nine batters to the plate in the first.

“Nothing against Ompa, but when we hit we hit,” San Pedro Coach Tony Dobra said. “This isn’t the first time we did this. We lit her up early and that’s a tribute to the kids. This is probably the best game we’ve played all year.”

Every San Pedro starter reached base and all but one had a hit.

Roberts and Diane Barile each had a single and a double. Hebert and Spanjol also had two hits, and Michael Ahumada scored twice and a had a stolen base for San Pedro.

“I thought it was going to be a lot tougher . . . a lot tougher to win,” said Ahumada, a senior left fielder. “We knew what they were going to do and they knew what we were going to do. I didn’t expect this at all. We just got going.”

Roberts, who drove in three runs, doubled in Ahumada in the second to give San Pedro a 6-0 lead, and the Pirates pushed across two runs in the fifth.
