Early-Morning Blaze Kills Man, Hurts Woman in Sunland

Fire investigators on Sunday were trying to determine the cause of an early-morning blaze that killed a 92-year-old man and injured an elderly woman at a Sunland house, authorities said.

The 4 a.m. fire in the 10600 block of Rhodesia Avenue was extinguished in about 20 minutes, but fire crews sifting through the rubble discovered the body of the unidentified man, Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said.

An autopsy will be performed later this week to determine the man’s identity and how he died, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said.

A woman also sustained first- and second-degree burns on her hands, Collis said. She was taken in a private car to a nearby hospital, but Collis did not know her condition or her identity.

The fire caused $35,000 damage to the house and $10,000 to its contents, Collis said.
