Stan Hedegard could only shake his head.

“Is that embarrassing or what?” the Buena High baseball coached asked after watching his Channel League all-stars lose, 6-1, to a team of Marmonte League all-stars on Saturday at Ventura College.

The Channel League mustered only seven hits in the nine-inning game. There were three reasons for the team’s trouble at the plate: Simi Valley’s Bill Treadway, Channel Islands’ Cesar Puga and Newbury Park’s Tim Farris.

“You have to give them credit,” Hedegard said. “They stuffed us.”

Simi Valley Coach Mike Scyphers, who coached the Marmonte League team, used each pitcher for three innings. They walked three and struck out six.

“I was worried about our pitching because we only had three and (I didn’t know) what would happen if we got in trouble,” Scyphers said. “It just goes to show you don’t need overpowering stuff. They just changed speeds and hit their spots. All three guys pitched exactly the same way.”

Treadway allowed the Channel League’s only run on a ground ball in the third inning that tied the score, 1-1. The Marmonte League took the lead in the fourth on back-to-back, run-scoring singles by Royal’s Gene Strojek and Thousand Oaks’ Jamal Nichols, who had tripled and scored in the first.

Nichols and Newbury Park shortstop David Lamb each had two hits.

Ventura’s Danny Lopez and Oxnard’s Marc Ledesma each had two hits for the Channel League, and Lopez would have had three if not for a diving catch in left field by Royal’s Dave Brown.

The Channel League defense did not support its pitchers, making five errors.

Buena’s Brandon Knight pitched the first three innings and Oxnard’s Ricardo Garcia, who pitched the next three, took the loss. Ventura’s John French and Oxnard’s Jess Olivares also pitched.

Oxnard’s Larry Bumpus and Buena’s Aaron Triana left after the third inning to play in the county all-star football game. They were a combined 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.

Tri-Valley League 12, Frontier League 10--The Frontier League all-stars ran out of pitchers and blew a 10-5 lead in the eighth inning to lose the first game of the day.

The Frontier League team had only two regular pitchers on the roster because there were so few seniors in the league this season.

After Moorpark’s Richard Hernandez and Calabasas’ Todd Cignarelli combined to allow one earned run in the first seven innings, Santa Paula’s Brian Whittaker, Santa Clara’s Eric Starna and Calabasas’ Colin Fields allowed seven runs in the eighth.

Starna had pitched once this season and Fields not at all.

Bishop Diego’s Adam Buczek drove in the go-ahead runs with a triple and earned the victory with three innings of relief.
