Mater Dei Places Four on All-Star Basketball Roster

Mater Dei has placed four basketball players on the Orange County team for the first Summer All-Star Classic, June 27 at Orange Coast College.

David Drakeford, Marmet Williams, Terence Wilborn and DeVaughn Wright will join six other county seniors in a game against San Diego County all-stars. Play begins at 7 p.m. and will feature NBA rules. Admission is $5.

The game’s Most Valuable Player award is named after Atlanta Hawk forward Adam Keefe, a graduate of Woodbridge High, and the Most Inspiration Player award is named after Mike Hopkins, a two-year starter at Syracuse who graduated from Mater Dei.

Both players, in addition to Dallas Maverick Sean Rooks and former Ram and Raider running back Greg Bell, will be judges for the slam-dunk competition at halftime.

Rounding out the county team: Aaron Aguilera (El Modena), Adam Dzierzynski (Santa Margarita), Jim Faulkner (Estancia), Jim Harris (Ocean View), Chris St. Clair (Sonora) and David Sedgwick (Capistrano Valley). The coach is Paul Hoover, an assistant coach at Santa Ana Valley.

Heading the San Diego team is Scot Pollard, a 6-foot-11 All-American from Torrey Pines High who is headed for Kansas.

The Orange County team will travel to Santa Barbara City College for a 7 p.m. game Sunday against the Gold Coast, a team of seniors from Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.
