Pitcher Ken Gajewski has become the fourth Cal State Dominguez Hills player to leave the NCAA Division II school for a Division I program.

Gajewski, who started 13 games last season and was 6-7 with a 4.62 earned-run average, said he has signed a scholarship agreement to play for Oklahoma.

He follows Greg Bergeron, an infielder who transferred to Loyola Marymount; pitcher Eric Duncan, who transferred to the University of San Francisco, and infielder Jason Gill, who has enrolled at Cal State Fullerton and is expected to join the Titans as a walk-on.

A fifth Dominguez Hills player, reserve catcher Troy Dunlap, has yet to announce his plans, but received a release from the school. The five players will be seniors next season and have a year of eligibility remaining.

Gajewski’s stock improved this summer because of his play in the Jayhawk collegiate league. Playing for a team from Clarinda, Iowa, he was 4-4 with a 2.80 ERA and recorded 40 strikeouts and only five walks in 50 innings.

He was planning to join Bergeron at Loyola on a partial scholarship before he received the offer from the Sooners.

“(Greg’s) my best friend and I had committed by phone to go there, but during the summer my coach (at Clarinda) had asked me if I was interested in going to Oklahoma,” Gajewski said.

“I’m lucky to get to go there. It’s a big-time school and a big-time team and they get a lot of fan support. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Pitching was not a strength of the Sooners last season and Gajewski expects to have an opportunity to start.

Dominguez Hills pitching coach John Verhoeven is sorry that Gajewski is leaving.

“I think Kenny’s going to help any staff he pitches on,” Verhoeven said. “I don’t know if he will start for Oklahoma, but I know he would’ve thrown about 100 innings with us. I don’t know if he’ll throw 50 innings with them, but he’ll help their staff.”

Gajewski said the fact that Dominguez Hills (29-26-1) has struggled in California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play the past three seasons and Bergeron’s decision to transfer were reasons for his decision to leave.

“The last couple of years have been tough,” he said. “It’s kind of hard to leave my friends behind, but this is something I have to do. I think the change will be good for me.”

Verhoeven is optimistic the Toros staff can overcome the loss of Gajewski and Duncan. Aaron Charlton from Arkansas, Bert Horn from Chapman and Marc Mosman from Santa Clara are transferring to Dominguez Hills.

“I don’t like losing (Ken) and Eric, but I have confidence in the kids who are replacing them and I know they can pitch,” he said.
