PREP FOOTBALL ’93 SUNSET LEAGUE : FACTS AND FIGURES : 1992 in Review

The Sunset League took a back seat to Division II co-champions Esperanza and Los Alamitos last season as the Aztecs and Griffins eliminated the league’s top teams by the second round.

Esperanza narrowly defeated Huntington Beach in the first round, 28-21, needing a 37-yard touchdown run by Dahrin Footman to provide the winning points.

Fountain Valley trailed Los Alamitos by four points at halftime before the Griffins took charge, scoring 28 unanswered points in the second half to advance with a 48-16 victory.

Baron quarterback Scott Bertoni, who passed for more than 1,900 yards and 19 touchdowns, and wide receiver Brian Gail helped Fountain Valley hand league champion Servite its only regular-season loss.

Servite quarterback Eric Hannah, who passed for 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns, and Steve Correa, who scored 13 touchdowns, led the Friars to the title after opening the season with a 0-0 tie against their former Angelus League rival, Mater Dei.

After the tie, Servite won seven consecutive games before its 17-14 loss to Fountain Valley.

After a first-round playoff victory, the Friars, who yielded fewer than six points per game in their first 11 games, allowed Saladin McCullough to rush for 189 yards and two touchdowns, leading Pasadena Muir to a 21-14 victory in the second round.

Led by 1,000-yard rusher John Marvos, Marina finished tied for second in league with Fountain Valley. But the Vikings also made an early exit in the playoffs, falling to Crescenta Valley, 25-9, in the first round.
