Adam Hoover threw two second-half touchdown passes to Jared Jones, and Canyon’s defense provided the final blow in a 30-16 nonleague victory over Buena Park Friday.

Jones caught touchdown passes of nine and 16 yards to help Canyon pull away from a 10-10 halftime tie. Hoover completed 18 of 26 passes for 156 yards, and three touchdowns.

With Buena Park on their own three and trailing, 23-16, with 3:10 left, Marcus Wilkins sacked George McDonald and caused a fumble. Wilkins pounced on the ball in the end zone to seal the victory for Canyon (2-0).

McDonald brought Buena Park (0-2) to within 17-16 on a four-yard touchdown run with 10:36 remaining. But Jamal Allen was stopped by Canyon’s Casey Pelle on the two-point conversion try.

For one half, Buena Park was able to match Canyon’s run-and-shoot offense score for score. McDonald, who completed just two of seven passes for 83 yards, hit Aaron Hudson with a 72-yard scoring strike to make it 10-10.

Greg Jacobs scored the first touchdown on a five-yard pass from Hoover, capping an eight-play, 64-yard drive.

McDonald led all rushers with 75 yards on nine carries but lost three fumbles in the fourth quarter.

The teams exchanged field goals in the first quarter, with Canyon’s Casey Wilson hitting a 23-yarder, and Jude Reyes connecting from 26 out for Buena Park.
