NOTES : Richard Smith to Coach at Newport Harbor
Richard Smith has been named the boys’ basketball coach at Newport Harbor High by Principal Steve Pavich.
Smith, 32, a math teacher, coached Servite from 1989-92, and the Friars won the State Division III championship in 1989-90 and the Southern Section Division III-AA title in 1991. He spent last season as an assistant at Cypress.
Smith takes over a program that was 12-14 last year and lost in the first round of the playoffs. He replaces Bob Serven, who was fired Aug. 19.

Jerry Kohler said he has been named the baseball coach at Laguna Beach High School.
Kohler was an assistant coach for the Artists last season. He replaces Donn Munsell, who resigned.
Laguna Beach was 10-15 and finished fifth in the Pacifica Coast League last season.
