COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titan Men Run to Title in Biola Meet

Brian Johnson finished second and Andrew Tansley fifth to lead the Cal State Fullerton men’s team to the championship of the Biola Invitational cross-country meet Saturday at La Mirada Regional Park.

Johnson covered the five-mile course in 25 minutes 59.1 seconds behind winner Dave Schumacher of the Beach Track Club, who finished in 25:02.8. Tansley ran 26:19.8, and UC Irvine’s Daniel Galindo finished in 26:34.9.

Fullerton scored 51 points to 61 for Nike West and 66 for Irvine.

In the women’s race, Fullerton finished second with 75 points to 28 for Nike West.

Heather Killeen of Fullerton was second in 17:44.4, under the old meet record but 5.5 seconds behind winner Elizabeth Onyambu of Biola.

In the Sundodger Invitational cross-country meet:

Irvine 10th--UC Irvine scored 260 points to finish well behind first-place finisher Arkansas, which scored 30 in the 5,000-meter race at Lincoln Park in Seattle.

Irvine’s top finisher, Traci Goodrich, was 20th in 18:00.4, a full minute behind the top runner Milena Glusac of Oregon.

Arkansas placed four runners among the top eight, including former Edison star Shelly Taylor, who was eighth in 17:40.

In the Eagle 5000 road race:

Graff wins--Genevieve Graff of Concordia finished first in the women’s division and ninth overall with a time of 17:38 at Concordia College. Teammate Kate Baker was third among women in 20:53.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, San Jose State 1--Allison Bantel had 21 kills to lead Irvine (9-6, 5-3) to a 15-9, 12-15, 15-10, 15-12 victory. Stacy Mitchell added 12 and Popi Edwards had 11 kills for the host Anteaters.

San Jose State was led by Crista Koch with 28 kills, Tanya Hart with 20 and Erin Ginney with 18. San Jose is 7-8, 3-4.

Utah State 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Still unable to come up a victory, Cal State Fullerton was again snuffed out by Utah State, which beat the Titans, 15-6, 15-11, 15-9. Marie Motil led Utah State with 13 kills. Jennifer Lipski had 10 kills for the Titans. Fullerton is 0-7 in conference play and 0-15 overall. Utah is 5-14, 3-5.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Westmont 3, Concordia 0--Goalie Eddie Huerta recorded 15 saves for Concordia, but his offense was held to only a pair of shots on goal. Concordia fell to 0-9, 0-4 in conference.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Santa Clara 5, UC Irvine 0--The Anteater’s could not stop the hot foot of Santa Clara freshman Mikka Hansen, who scored her first college hat trick. UC Irvine fell to 7-3; Santa Clara is 9-2.
