The Del Rey League football championship will be at stake Friday when Bishop Amat plays host to Loyola.

Bishop Amat, ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times, is 8-0. Sixth-ranked Loyola is 7-1, its only loss coming against fifth-ranked Antelope Valley in a nonleague game.

The game is a rematch of last season’s Division I championship game in which Bishop Amat defeated the Cubs, 7-3.

Bishop Amat is led by senior running back Rodney Sermons and junior flanker-defensive back Daylon McCutcheon. Loyola is led by running back Kadar Hamilton.

San Gabriel Valley water polo teams are well represented in the Southern Section polls, with South Pasadena No. 1 in Division III and Wilson No. 8.

Rowland is ranked fifth in Division II. Bonita is ranked second in Division IV and La Puente is ranked 10th.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Citrus football team plays host to Antelope Valley Saturday in a Foothill Conference game.

Citrus (5-2, 3-1 in conference) is coming off a 17-14 victory over San Jacinto. Kevin O’Leary kicked what proved to be a game-winning 39-yard field goal with 6 minutes 28 seconds left.

Quarterback Curtis Robinson completed eight of 13 passes for 122 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown pass to Rashon McCall. Robinson also scored on a two-yard run.

Pasadena City College (2-6) has a bye this week after losing to Cerritos, 38-16, in a Mission Conference game on Saturday.

Stacy Townsend and Peter Teichmann scored touchdowns for the Lancers, who had four turnovers.

Mt. San Antonio College (5-2), which had a bye last week, plays a Mission Conference game at El Camino Saturday.

The Mounties will try to end a two-game losing streak after defeats by Palomar and Long Beach.

COLLEGES

La Verne’s football team will attempt to keep its place atop the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings Saturday when the Leopards travel to Redlands.

La Verne (5-2, 4-0 in the SCIAC) is coming off a 24-6 victory over Pomona-Pitzer. Danny Pasquil gained 112 yards and scored a touchdown, and Darren McClellan scored two touchdowns for La Verne.

Pomona-Pitzer plays Claremont Saturday. Pomona-Pitzer running back Tony Fadulu gained 169 yards against La Verne. He is 95 yards shy of the school’s career rushing record of 2,125 yards held by George Bushala, and 166 yards short of Bushala’s single-season record of 1,010 yards.

Claremont is coming off a record-breaking performance in a 68-42 loss to Occidental, during which the teams combined for a Division III record 1,395 yards. The combined point total was one point shy of the Division III record set in Carroll’s 58-53 victory over Illinois Wesleyan.

Claremont quarterback John Shipp completed 20 of 37 passes for 443 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions. Darren Gonzalez caught 10 passes for 221 yards.

Azusa Pacific (2-6) has a bye this week after losing to San Diego, 24-21.

Avo Artinyan of Pomona-Pitzer was the top male finisher at the SCIAC cross-country championships staged last weekend in Chino. Artinyan covered the 8-K course in 26:00.9 and led the Sagehens to a second-place finish.

Brad Aagaard of Claremont finished third in 26:15.1 as the Stags won the SCIAC men’s title.

All SCIAC teams will compete in the NCAA Division III Regionals Nov. 13 in Chino. The top three men’s and women’s teams and top three individuals will advance to the NCAA Division III championships Nov. 20 at Grinnell College (Iowa).

Azusa Pacific’s men’s and women’s cross-country team will compete in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 championship meet Saturday in La Mirada. Winners receive automatic berths in the NAIA championships Nov. 20 at Kenosha, Wis.

Cal Poly Pomona will play host to the Division II cross-country West Regional on Saturday.

Pomona’s Cliff Curtis, who finished sixth at last week’s California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championships, and Chuck Foote (11th) were named all-conference. Rosetta Hunter (14th) was the only Pomona woman named all-conference.

The Claremont men’s soccer team, which has won or shared 13 consecutive SCIAC championships, will play Colorado College Saturday in San Diego in the first round of the Division III West Regional. Claremont is seeded third, Colorado second.

Top-seeded UC San Diego plays fourth-seeded Gustavus Adolphus in the other semifinal.

The Azusa Pacific women’s soccer team played Cal Baptist in an NAIA District 3 playoff game Wednesday. Results were not available at press time. The winner was to advance to the district finals Saturday against Westmont.

The district champion will advance to the NAIA West Regional at Willamette University (Ore.) on Nov. 12-13.

Maril Davis of Claremont’s women’s team finished her career with 105 goals, which ranks her fourth on the NCAA all-time list for all divisions.

Tim Cooley and Ramsey Gerber of Claremont won three doubles matches at the Rolex Small College tennis championships last week at Edmond, Okla., before losing to eventual champion Lander University (Fla.).

Claire Turchi of Pomona-Pitzer won one match and lost two in women’s singles. Rebecca Huereque and Tracy Nguyen of Cal Poly Pomona lost their first doubles match and defaulted in the consolation round. Huereque lost her first two singles matches.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Orlando Washington, Ganesha--Washington gained 116 yards and scored all four touchdowns, including two in the last six minutes, to give the Giants a 28-23 victory over previously unbeaten Charter Oak.

Ganesha improved to 6-2, 3-0 in the Miramonte League.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Ruth Cooper and Lydia Dondich of Arcadia, Sylvia Sollberger and Ursula Gordon of Altadena, Linda Powell of Pasadena, and Madeline Robertson of Glendora are members of a San Gabriel Valley women’s senior tennis team that will compete in the United States Tennis Assn. Nationals in Phoenix this weekend. The team advanced by defeating San Diego in the regional finals.

The San Gabriel Valley Kids Wrestling Club is holding sign-ups each Monday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the small gym at Arroyo High in El Monte.
