SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

El Toro High’s Brent Stoll scored in sudden-death overtime Wednesday to give the Chargers their second consecutive Southern Section Division I water polo championship.

It also gave his father, El Toro Coach Don Stoll, a special thrill.

“To have two sons (Brent and goalie Greg) in at the end of the game, and have one of them score the winning goal, that’s just icing on the cake,” Stoll said.

Brent’s shot defeated Corona del Mar, 10-9, at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.

“I just closed my eyes and threw it in the corner,” Stoll said of his shot. “Then, instant adrenaline. Then I cramped up and felt like I couldn’t breathe. I’m sure it will hit me once I get over my exhaustion.”

Stoll and the rest of the Chargers (28-2) had reason to be tired. They trailed, 7-2, in the third quarter, but rallied to score seven consecutive goals.

The Chargers took a 9-7 lead in the fourth quarter, but Corona del Mar’s Brad Buzolich and Kevin Tucker scored in the final minutes to tie the score.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Stoll rifled the winning shot into the upper left corner of the goal 25 seconds into the second overtime.

El Toro has won five section championships in the last six years.

Division II--Matt Bainer scored four goals to lead Riverside Poly to a 9-5 victory over Fullerton Sunny Hills.

Eliot Despins and Mike Burgess each added two goals for Poly.

Division III--South Pasadena defeated Costa Mesa, 12-11, in sudden-death overtime.

Brian Butcher scored the winning goal for the Tigers (28-4), and teammates Jeremy Estep and Trevor Bryson each scored four goals.

Division IV--San Bernardino defeated Fountain Valley Los Amigos, 18-12.

Ryan Williams led San Bernardino with seven goals.
