PREP ROUNDUP : Marina’s Unbeaten Streak in Soccer at 24

Share

Marina, the top-ranked girls’ soccer team in Orange County and the Southern Section Division I, took a step toward proving it is the best team in the Sunset League by defeating Ocean View, 3-0, Tuesday at Ocean View.

Ocean View (9-5-1, 0-1 in league), ranked fifth in Orange County, made a game of it early, but Marina (14-0, 1-0) had too many weapons and extended its unbeaten streak to 24 games.

Last season, the Vikings finished their league season with five victories after losing a second league game--to Edison.

“This year we don’t want to lose a game in league,” Marina Coach Bobby Bruch said.

Seven minutes into the game Tuesday, midfielder Cassie Campbell gave the Vikings the lead with a goal off a rebound of her own shot. It was Campbell’s 17th goal of the season.

A minute later, Ocean View nearly tied the score when Marina goalkeeper Jennifer Simmons slipped in the mud near the goal, leaving an open net, but the Seahawks were not able to get a shot on goal. Simmons made a nice save of a header by Shannon Donegan with about 12 minutes left in the half. Then with five minutes left, Simmons slipped again but Marina defenders were able to protect the open net.

Marina scored twice in the first 21 minutes of the second half. Jenny Benson made a crossing pass that somehow found the corner of the goal and Rhiannon Tanaka beat Ocean View goalkeeper Lynn Brown to the ball near the endline and made a perfect crossing pass to Megan Orach in front of an empty goal.
