Despite the differences in attitude, the El Dorado and Los Alamitos girls’ soccer teams played to a 2-2 tie Thursday at El Dorado in their Empire League opener.

“It was difficult for us to get up for this,” Los Alamitos Coach Mark Morin said. “But this was just our first league game and El Dorado is not a big rival of ours.”

No. 7 El Dorado (12-3-2) played a spirited game, hoping to start the league season by knocking off last season’s league champions, No. 8 Los Alamitos (8-2-1).

However, two late goals by Los Alamitos frustrated the Golden Hawks.

“I really think we outplayed them,” El Dorado Coach Jeff Holcomb said. “Our biggest problem has been starting slow, but today I thought we came out good and played a full 80-minute game for the first time this season.”

El Dorado controlled the first half, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Carlye Wind. Wind scored again early in the second half, but the Griffins followed with a late charge.

With about 25 minutes left in the game, Nicolle Storey scored on El Dorado’s Kristee Schmidt. Schmidt made the initial save, one of three in the game, but then tapped in the ball.

Laura Kuzminsky then tied the score with about eight minutes left, taking a pass from Sommer Hammoud on an outnumbered attack.
