PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Capistrano Valley Upsets Mater Dei

Mater Dei, the top-ranked boys’ soccer team in Orange County, was shut out by unranked Capistrano Valley, 3-0, in a South Coast League game Friday at Capistrano Valley High.

Ryan Hawkins scored the first goal on an assist by Chris Tullar early in the first half, and Steve Braud added the second after taking a pass from Dustin Layne to make it 2-0 at halftime.

Jud Nester made it 3-0 in the second half. Goalie Mirko Vuksic had nine saves for Capistrano Valley (10-5-3, 2-2). Mater Dei dropped to 16-1-3, 4-1.

In another South Coast game:

San Clemente 1, Dana Hills 0--Rob Overson scored for San Clemente (7-7-5, 1-1-3).

In the Century League:

Canyon 2, Villa Park 2--Sasha Saneff tied it with 10 minutes remaining for Canyon, which also got a goal from Steve Maynard. Shawn Power and Ryan Hollis scored for Villa Park (9-3-7, 2-1-2).

El Modena 2, Foothill 1--Justin Boyce and Bret Taylor scored first-half goals for El Modena (5-5-1, 2-3). Lars Vreeland scored for host Foothill (1-2-2 in league).

Santa Ana Valley 2, Orange 1--Rafael Reynosa and Oscar Lara scored first-half goals for visiting Santa Ana Valley (11-1-4, 3-1-1), ranked fourth in the county. Hugo Regalado scored for Orange (8-6-5, 1-2-2).

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 2, Buena Park 0--Chris Fernandez and Todd Barnett scored second-half goals for visiting Sonora (4-1 in league). Jamal Allen had 12 saves for Buena Park (3-6-1, 0-4-1).

Sunny Hills 3, Fullerton 1--D.J. Buckley scored his second hat track of the year for Sunny Hills (11-5-2, 4-1). which remained tied with Sonora for first in league play. Fullerton is 5-7-5 and 2-2-1.

Troy 1, La Habra 1--Nick Ruzzi gave Troy the lead with 10 minutes left, but La Habra’s Miguel Garcia tied the score five minutes later. Robert Connell had 14 saves for Troy (0-3-2 in league). La Habra is 8-4-4, 2-1-1.

In the Garden Grove League:

Los Amigos 1, Pacifica 1--Trevor Stivers gave Pacifica the lead five minutes into the second half, but Frank Aceves tied it with just over 15 minutes left. Robert Duncan had nine saves for Pacifica (5-5-4, 3-1-4). Los Amigos is 6-7-2, 4-2-2.

In the Olympic League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 1, Orange Lutheran 0--Junior Matt Davenport scored on a penalty kick for Capistrano Valley Christian (2-7-3, 1-3), and Peter Gorgantopolous had eight saves.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 1, Savanna 0--Elmer Rivas scored for Anaheim (14-5-1, 3-2) with a minute remaining.

Santiago 4, Rancho Alamitos 0--Timo Rodriguez scored twice, and Albert Mendez and Enrique Argon added one goal each for host Santiago (9-3-3, 7-0-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 1, Century 0--Nick Sanai headed in a throw-in from Kyle Brown 10 minutes into the game, and Laguna Hills (9-7-1, 5-0) held on.

Trabuco Hills 3, Costa Mesa 1--Aaron Conklin, Gerry Beckham and Long Nguyen each scored second-half goals for Trabuco Hills (10-6-1, 4-1).

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 4, Irvine 1--Eric Olsen scored twice for visiting Corona del Mar (13-2-3, 6-0-1), the county’s second-ranked team.

Saddleback 5, Woodbridge 0--Raul Montes scored two goals for Saddleback (12-2-4, 4-0-3). Junior Eddie Lopez made eight saves and scored in the second half on a penalty kick. Jason Hause made eight saves for Woodbridge (6-4-3, 1-4-2).

Newport Harbor 4, University 2--Alessio Smith scored twice for visiting Newport Harbor (4-8-4, 2-4-1).

Santa Margarita 1, Tustin 0--Chon Kantikvit scored 15 minutes into the second half to lead Santa Margarita (10-2-3, 4-2-1), the county’s seventh-ranked team.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 2, Huntington Beach 1--Brian Bagby scored both goals for visiting Edison.

Fountain Valley 6, Westminster 0--Brent Futagaki, Brian Billings and Joey Vasquez each scored two goals, and Scott Hainlen recorded four saves to lead Fountain Valley (3-8-4, 1-4-3).

Marina 2, Ocean View 1 (2 OT)--Joe Borzoni scored the winning goal for Marina (12-4, 7-1) on an assist by Jose Monroy. Joey Samples also scored for the Vikings.
