GAME OF THE WEEK : It’s Showtime as Cubs Prevail in Overtime : Community colleges: Brown stars as LACC defeats Compton, 106-101, in the Cubs’ first televised game.

Markee Brown was cognizant that Los Angeles City College basketball team was playing in its first televised game.

Whether he butted chests with his teammates for inspiration or taunted his defender after making a clutch basket, Brown put on quite a performance.

The freshman guard hit six three-pointers, including one at the start of overtime, to boost LACC to a 106-101 win over Compton College in a Southern California Athletic Conference game at home Wednesday night.

Brown, who led the Cubs (20-3, 2-0) with 29 points, was 9-for-18 from the floor.

“It’s preparation,” Brown said, who was 6-for-9 from the three-point line. “I come in the gym early before the game and shoot, so I am ready when my team needs me.”

Brown hit a crucial three-pointer with 4:30 in overtime to open the Cubs’ 13-8 onslaught over the Tartars in the overtime.

LACC took a 73-65 lead midway through the second half before Compton’s Michael Whittaker put on an offensive display of his own. Whittaker, who had a game-high 32 points, scored 14 of Compton’s next 21 to tie game at 86.

Whittaker sent the game into overtime on a slicing layup between two defenders to knot the score at 93 as time expired.

LACC Coach Mike Miller was not surprised at Compton’s (14-11, 0-2) resiliency. “They put us to a test,” Miller said, “I wasn’t surprised at their effort because they are much better than their record indicates.”

When LACC All-American Marty Conwright fouled out 5:26 into the second half with only five points and four rebounds, it appeared that Compton would have a decided advantage in the middle. But guards Derrick Higgins, who scored 23 points including six in overtime, and Mike Dorsey, who added 15, combined for 10 rebounds.

“We couldn’t get the rebounds late in the game and that really hurt us,” Whittaker said.

Behind the play of forward Brian Tyler, the Tartars had neither scoring nor rebounding problems in the first half. Tyler, who made 23 points and grabbed six rebounds, hit three consecutive three-pointers to stretch Compton’s lead to, 37-33.

“Michael (Whittaker) and I are the go-to guys, so we step up when the team needs points,” Tyler said. “(Scoring) is an every-night thing for us.”
