PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Marina Blanks Edison, Remains Tied for First

Marina, ranked seventh in Orange County in boys’ soccer, defeated No. 5 Edison, 4-0, Wednesday to remain tied with Santa Ana for first in the Sunset League.

The Vikings (14-4-1, 9-1-1 in league) scored twice in each half and Bobby Yorke had seven saves in his eighth shutout of the season.

Third-place Edison is 16-3-1 and 8-3.

In other Sunset League games:

Santa Ana 7, Westminster 1--Gerardo Velazquaz scored two goals and Jorge Valdez, Candido Lopez, Jose Cadena, Francisco Lagunas and Ezequiel Uribe each scored one for No. 6 Santa Ana (12-4-2, 9-1-1).

Huntington Beach 3, Fountain Valley 1 (OT)--Deme Ordaz and Garrett Adams each scored in overtime and Brian Bible scored in regulation for Huntington Beach (6-9-2, 3-7-1). Kevin Johnson scored a second-half goal for host Fountain Valley (4-9-5, 2-5-4).

Servite 3, Ocean View 1--Scott Cutshall scored two goals and Shawn Parchan had one for Servite (8-9, 6-5). Luan Lai scored for Ocean View (3-14-2, 0-10-1).

In the Century League:

Canyon 2, Orange 1--Steve Maynard scored the winning goal on an assist by Dan O’Leary midway through the second half for host Canyon (14-5-3, 4-2-1).

Casey Wilson scored in the first half for Canyon on a direct kick from 50 yards, but Eduardo Rodriguez tied the score before the end of the half. Aaron Harries had 10 saves for Canyon (14-5-3, 4-2-1). Aldo Zuniga had 15 saves for Orange (8-8-5, 1-4-2).

El Modena 2, Santa Ana Valley 1--El Modena’s Felipe Chavez scored the tying goal with 20 minutes remaining and Bret Taylor put the Vanguards (6-6-1, 3-4) ahead 10 minutes later to beatsixth-ranked Santa Ana Valley.

Katella 0, El Dorado 0--Marcelo Miranda got a shutout in his first game as goalkeeper for Katella (2-7-7, 0-4-3). El Dorado’s record is 7-6-6, 2-3-2.

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 4, Troy 2--Byron Loyes and Jose Barrera each had a goal and an assist for Buena Park (4-7-1, 1-5-1).

Sonora 3, Fullerton 2--Alberto Ramirez scored his third goal of the game with three minutes remaining to give 10th-ranked Sonora (13-3-2, 6-1) the victory. Fullerton’s Antonio Jaramillo had tied the score on a penalty kick with 28 minutes left.

Sunny Hills 7, La Habra 2--Chris Roselli and Brett Ackerman each had three goals for host Sunny Hills (13-5-2, 6-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

Los Amigos 3, La Quinta 0--Manuel Navarro, Enrique Flores and Joe Valdovinos each scored for host Los Amigos (8-8-2, 6-3-2).

Pacifica 2, Rancho Alamitos 1--Trevor Stivers had a goal and an assist for Pacifica (6-3-4, 5-2-4).

Santiago 1, Bolsa Grande 1--Antonio Diaz scored for Santiago (11-3-3, 9-0-2), which clinched a share of the league championship. Hung Mai scored for Bolsa Grande (3-4-4 in league).

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 1, Brea-Olinda 0--Jose Sanchez scored on an assist by Juan Lopez midway through the second half as Anaheim (16-5-2, 5-2), ranked fifth in Southern Section Division III, beat No. 4 Brea-Olinda (5-1-1 in league).

Savanna 5, Magnolia 2--Walter Altamirano scored three goals and Daniel Moise had two for Savanna (6-6-4, 2-3-2).

Valencia 1, Western 1--Bryon Vernel’s unassisted goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half tied the score for second-place Western (8-5-2, 4-1-2).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 2, Century 1--Carlos Avalos and Fred Wood scored for Costa Mesa (6-9-4, 2-3-3).

In Sea View League girls’ soccer:

Newport Harbor 1, Santa Margarita 0--Santa Margarita, ranked seventh in Orange County, lost its first league game of the season when Newport Harbor’s Jenny St. Sure scored in the 25th minute of the first half.

St. Sure’s goal came on a rebound of a Meggen Fleener bicycle-kick shot that deflected off the crossbar. St. Sure beat Santa Margarita goalie Riki-Ann Serrin to the loose ball.

Serrin had six saves for the Eagles (14-5-1, 10-1). Jeremy Teal also had six saves for Newport Harbor (11-8-2, 7-3-2).

University 2, Tustin 1--Jill Sorenson and Amy Fylppa scored for University (5-9-3, 4-5-2). Kelly Perez scored a late goal for Tustin (1-12-4, 0-6-4).

Irvine 0, Woodbridge 0--Missy Brigman had two saves for Irvine and Courtney Spelber had five saves for host Woodbridge (6-11-4, 2-6-3).
