PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Grossman Sets Mark; Dana Hills Clinches Playoff Spot

Behind the record-breaking play of Karun Grossman, Dana Hills clinched a spot in the playoffs Tuesday, eliminating Capistrano Valley with a 56-41 victory in a South Coast League girls’ basketball game at Dana Hills.

Grossman, a senior who scored 25 points to raise her career total to 1,065, broke the Dana Hills record of 1,059 held by Adara Newidouski, who graduated in 1992.

The Dolphins (17-6, 6-3) also set a record for most victories in a season.

Dana Hills went on an 8-0 run late in the first half to take a 30-22 lead. Capistrano Valley (12-12, 4-5) scored first in the third quarter, but the Dolphins went on an 11-0 run to take a 41-24 lead.

“I’m really proud of their defensive play,” Dana Hills Coach Mike Chapman said. “We weren’t rebounding well at first, but then we started getting the boards and broke the game open.”

In another South Coast League girls’ game:

Mater Dei 73, Mission Viejo 43--Melody Peterson had 16 points and five assists, and Leticia Oseguera had 12 points and nine rebounds for third-ranked Mater Dei (19-3, 9-0).

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 47, Connelly 43--Shay Trette scored 12 points to lead a balanced St. Margaret’s attack.

In the Century League:

El Modena 30, Orange 24--Jamie Shine had 12 points and 16 rebounds for El Modena (10-10, 6-3).

Villa Park 58, Santa Ana Valley 37--Maureen Skehan scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds for Villa Park (20-3, 8-1), which clinched a share of the league title.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 88, Loara 41--Jessica Eggleston had 23 points and 16 rebounds, Susan Flaming had 17 points, including three three-pointers, and Julie Adams had 15 points and 12 assists to lead Cypress (22-3, 8-1), the second-ranked team in the county.

El Dorado 55, Katella 47--Jamie Nebeker scored 16 points and Shanna Renken added 15 for host El Dorado (18-6, 7-2).

Esperanza 65, Los Alamitos 35--Jodie Howard scored 17 points to lead Esperanza (14-9, 5-4).

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 53, Sonora 50--Three players scored in double figures for Sunny Hills (5-14, 3-6), led by Randi Kameoka with 17 points.

La Habra 45, Buena Park 25--Amy Lien scored 14 points and Aimee Weathers had 12 for visiting La Habra (12-9, 6-3).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 81, Valencia 25--Colleen Hudson had 15 points and Sarah Beckley had 12 for Brea-Olinda (24-0, 9-0). Valencia is 11-9, 5-4 in league.

Magnolia 65, Anaheim 32--Whitney Torregano scored 20 points for Magnolia.

Western 45, Savanna 40--Isabel Rojas scored 22 points for Western (10-14, 4-5).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 55, Whittier Christian 50--Kristen Weddick had 21 points and Lori Wright had 14 for Orange Lutheran (13-9, 7-4).

Calvary Chapel 41, Ontario Christian 32--Blythe Linsey had 12 points and 16 rebounds for Calvary Chapel (15-9, 7-4).

Capistrano Valley Christian 55, Brethren Christian 18--Andie Shaffner scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds for visiting Capistrano Valley Christian (10-11, 4-7).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 77, Laguna Beach 18--Heather Robinson had 22 points and 17 rebounds to lead Costa Mesa (15-7, 9-0).

Trabuco Hills 61, Laguna Hills 34--Dyanna Hatch and Jennifer Ross each scored 13 points for host Trabuco Hills (13-11, 7-2).

Estancia 58, Century 34--Laura Czingula had 16 points, eight rebounds and seven steals and Jenny Drake had 14 points for Estancia (19-4, 7-3), which clinched third place.

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 63, Tustin 52--Melanie Pearson had 18 points and 12 rebounds and teammate Angela Burgess had 13 points and 21 rebounds for second-ranked Woodbridge (24-0, 13-0), which clinched the league championship for the ninth time in 11 years.

University 61, Irvine 54--Mary Medina had 16 points and eight assists and Jennifer Stanley had 15 points for University (13-8, 7-6), which clinched fourth place and a spot in the playoffs.

Newport Harbor 55, Corona del Mar 39--Melissa Schutz had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead Newport Harbor (18-6, 11-2), the seventh-ranked team in the county.

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 63, Fountain Valley 54--Farrah Magee scored 18 points, Becky Fraser had 15 points and Dustine Yamamoto had 12 points to lead Ocean View (20-4, 11-2), the sixth-ranked team in the county. Yamamoto made four free throws and had a three-pointer in the fourth quarter.

Erin Avila scored 18 points for Fountain Valley (16-8, 8-5), the eighth-ranked team in the county.

Marina 62, Rosary 44--Marina (18-6, 11-2) outscored Rosary, 24-0, in the first quarter and cruised from there.

Edison 61, Santa Ana 55--Marie Philman scored 27 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, for host Edison (16-6, 7-6).

Huntington Beach 62, Westminster 58--Jenny Pogue had 14 points and seven rebounds for Huntington Beach (8-14, 4-9).

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 106, St. Michael’s 23--Damian Raibon had 26 points and eight rebounds for visiting St. Margaret’s (17-3, 7-0), which won its 12th consecutive game and clinched the league championship.

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 50, Kennedy 40--Cuong Doan had 14 points and Brian Stewart had 13 for Bolsa Grande (13-10, 9-4).

Los Amigos 69, Garden Grove 56--Carlos Siaez had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Chris Yu had 17 points for Los Amigos (11-13, 7-6).

La Quinta 64, Rancho Alamitos 49--Todd Snyder had 13 points, 12 assists and four steals for host La Quinta (14-10, 8-5).

In the Olympic League:

Whittier Christian 68, Orange Lutheran 45--Dan McCullar scored 15 points for Whittier Christian (20-3, 11-1).
