PREP BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Mater Dei Breezes Past Arroyo

Top-ranked Santa Ana Mater Dei used well-balanced scoring in a 90-39, Southern Section Division I-A, second-round victory over El Monte Arroyo at the UC Irvine Bren Center Friday night.

Mater Dei’s Clay McKnight and Miles Simon each scored 21 points, Schea Cotton added 19 and Shaun Jackson 16.

Mater Dei (28-0) took a 56-20 halftime lead over Arroyo (21-6). McKnight made five three-pointers and Simon had 11 assists and four three-pointers.

No. 6 Inglewood 80, Rosemead 50--Paul Pierce scored 26 points and Ray Outler 15 to lead Inglewood (24-3) to a Division II-AA, first-round victory over Rosemead (14-10) at Inglewood.

No. 7 Riverside J.W. North 61, Claremont 46--Brian Hooks scored 23 points to lead J.W. North (25-0) in a Division II-AA, first-round victory over Claremont (11-16) at J.W. North.

No. 8 Bellflower St. John Bosco 79, West Torrance 61--Jelani Gardner scored 31 points, including 20 in the second half, to lead St. John Bosco (24-2) in a Division II-A, first-round victory over West Torrance (11-14) at St. John Bosco.

No. 13 Los Alamitos 74, Bell Gardens 53--Tim Lin scored 25 points, including six three-pointers, to lead Los Alamitos (22-4) over Bell Gardens (21-7) in a Division I-AA, second-round game at Los Alamitos.

No. 14 Loyola 68, Saugus 47--Brothers Toby and Moose Bailey each scored a game-high 18 points as Mission League champion Loyola (20-5) defeated Saugus (11-11) in a Division I-A, second-round playoff game.

No. 18 Santa Ana Valley 51, Long Beach Jordan 50--Olujimi Mann scored 27 points and made the winning free throw with four seconds remaining to lift Santa Ana Valley (25-3) to a Division I-AA, second-round victory at Jordan (11-13).

In other games: Ty Berry scored 19 points to lead Ayala (22-4) to a 55-32, Division I-AA, second-round victory over Alhambra (15-11) at Ayala. . . . Richard Diaz scored a game-high 29 points and Michael Batiste had 28 to carry Long Beach Wilson (21-7) to a 92-88, overtime victory against Canyon Country Canyon (20-7) in a Division I-AA, second-round game at Wilson.
