BOYS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING ’94 / Six Teams to Watch : Mission Viejo

Share

Coach: Mike Pelton (18th year).

1993: South Coast League champion; second at Division I championship meet.

Key returners: Andy Davis, Sr.; Ahmad Filsoof, Jr.; Karl Hyross, So.; Brad Kaup, Sr.; Kenta Nakamura, Sr.

Key newcomers: Breeno Noguiera, Sr.; Bart Sikora, Sr.

Outlook: The Diablos made a strong run at the Division I championship, but Marina’s mega-depth sank their chances. What Mission Viejo lacked in team depth was made up in individual efforts: Robert Delgado won the 100-yard butterfly, Peter Struglinski was the 100 breaststroke champion and Jason Hubbart won in diving. This year, Mission Viejo will have about as much depth as last year, and still has individual threats in Kaup (fifth, 50 freestyle), Filsoof (fifth, 200 freestyle; eighth, 100 butterfly) and Kyross (sixth, 100 backstroke). Any Diablo team wouldn’t be complete without a Polish swimmer. Bart Sikora, part of the Diablos’ famous Polish connection, had to sit out last year because of eligibility requirements, but will suit up this season.
