PREP BOYS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Monarchs Reign in Final Period

Miles Simon scored 30 points and Schea Cotton 21 to lead Santa Ana Mater Dei, second-ranked by the Times, to a 78-60 victory over No. 14 Loyola in a Southern Section Division I-A semifinal game at Pauley Pavilion on Friday night.

Before 6,000, Loyola (22-5) stayed close for three quarters. The Cubs trailed, 36-34, at halftime and 53-46 after three quarters. But Mater Dei (30-0) went on a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to break it open.

Mater Dei will play Huntington Beach Edison in the championship game next Saturday night at Anaheim Arena. Edison upset Palmdale, 65-63, in the other semifinal.

Loyola’s Toby Bailey, who has signed with UCLA, scored 16 points and made seven of 16 shots.

No. 2 Crenshaw 106, Washington 74--Crenshaw forced 18 turnovers and enjoyed a 49-22 rebounding advantage in a City Section 4-A quarterfinal game at Washington. Tremaine Fowlkes led the Cougars (23-2) with 27 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Dayron Harris of Washington (12-12) led all scorers with 30 points and four rebounds, but he fouled out with 6:40 in the fourth quarter.

Dorsey 71, No. 5 Westchester 68--Rickey Blackman scored 23 points and Sherwin Moran added 13 to lead Dorsey (14-10) to an upset over second-seeded Westchester (23-5) in a City 4-A quarterfinal game at Crenshaw High. Ben Sanders scored 16 points for Westchester.

No. 6 Inglewood 60, Huntington Beach 47--Second-seeded Inglewood jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back in a Southern Section II-AA quarterfinal game at Marina High. Paul Pierce scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Inglewood (26-3). Tony Gonzalez led Huntington Beach (19-11) with 25 points.

No. 8 Bellflower St. John Bosco 80, Manhattan Mira Costa 60--Jelani Gardner scored a game-high 29 points, including four three-pointers, to lead second-seeded St. John Bosco (26-2) to a II-A quarterfinal victory at Cypress College. Shane Willis led Mira Costa (22-7) with 21 points.

No. 15 Verbum Dei 82, Santa Monica St. Monica 51--Andre Smith scored a game-high 21 points to lead Verbum Dei (22-2) in a IV-A quarterfinal game at Santa Monica High. Deon Williams added 18 points for Verbum Dei.

No. 20 Fremont 55, No. 13 Fairfax 47--Trailing Fairfax, 31-30, after three quarters, the Pathfinders (21-5) broke the City quarterfinal game open in the fourth. Forward Dion Champion, who had 19 rebounds, made all six of his free throws in the last three minutes for Fremont. Calvin Patterson added 16 points at Fremont.

In other games: Anthony Browder hit two free throws with seven seconds to play to lift Carson (18-7) to a 56-53 victory over Reseda Cleveland (14-8) in a City Division 4-A game at Cleveland. Browder finished with 21 points. . . . Mario Hernandez hit three free throws in the final six seconds to lead Roosevelt (13-11) to a 52-49 upset victory over top-seeded Reseda in City 3-A quarterfinal game at Birmingham High. Hernandez finished with 20 points. . . . Lamarr House scored 26 points and added nine assists and seven rebounds as Gardena (11-13) upset second-seeded Franklin, 73-56, in a City Division 3-A quarterfinal game at Gardena. . . .

Chris Vlasic scored 20 points to lead Garden Grove Pacifica (26-1) to a 59-54 victory over second-seeded La Canada (26-2) in a III-A semifinal game at Rancho Santiago College. Eric Sanchez led La Canada with 18 points. . . .

Pat Quinlan had 16 points and 15 rebounds in Sante Fe Springs St. Paul’s 67-60 victory over Playa del Rey St. Bernard (14-12) in a IV-AA semifinal game at El Rancho High. St. Paul improved to 16-11. . . . Ricky Price scored a game-high 28 points to lead Gardena Serra (17-9) to an 84-68 victory over Sun Valley Village Christian in a IV-A quarterfinal game at Inglewood High. . . .
