SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Cal State Los Angeles women edged rival Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 91-90, to place second in the recent Mustang Open.

Stanford won the meet with 173 points.

But the outcome of the seven-team meet did little to ease Cal State L.A. Coach Greg Ryan’s concerns about what will happen when the same two rivals meet at the California College Athletic Assn. championships in May.

“It’s like a chess match,” Ryan said. “We’re trying to guess who (Cal Poly) is going to put in what event, and they’re trying to figure out what we’re going to do. We don’t want to let them go uncontested in any event. We need to go head to head with them as much as we can.”

The strategy has paid dividends for Cal State L.A. the past two years.

In 1992, the Golden Eagles held off Cal Poly, 202-197, to end the Mustangs’ 11-year title reign. Cal State L.A. beat them again last year, 184 1/2-172, to win its second consecutive CCAA title.

Janet Hill, the defending NCAA Division II champion in the shotput and discus, will be prominent in the Golden Eagles’ bid for a third title. The senior won the shotput and discus with marks of 45-9 3/4 and 174-3 at the Mustang Open. Ganet Gorgis, Oshonda Posey and Marisol Pedraza also attained provisional qualifying marks for the Division II championships at the April 2 meet.

Gorgis won the 3,000 meters in 9 minutes 51.12 seconds and Posey placed second in the 100 meters in 11.96. Pedraza was third in the 1,500 meters in 4:37.81 in a race won by 1992 U.S. Olympian PattiSue Plummer.

Barry Smith and William McCoy paced Cal State L.A. to a fourth-place finish among eight men’s teams. Stanford won with 160 points, followed by Brigham Young and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with 128 1/2 and 126 points, respectively.

Smith, the 1989 state high school 200-meter champion, won the 100 in 10.54 and was second in the 200 in 21.61. McCoy leaped 24-1 to win the long jump and bounded 48-9 to finish fifth in the triple jump.

Smith and McCoy also combined with John Hensley and Ruben Benitez on the Golden Eagles’ victorious 400 relay (41.39).
