PREP ROUNDUP : Weinstein Stays Undefeated for Corona del Mar

Jed Weinstein improved his record to 24-0 as fourth-ranked Corona del Mar (11-2, 8-1) defeated No. 7 Woodbridge (11-4, 6-3) Friday in Sea View League boys’ tennis.

Weinstein, the only undefeated Sea View player, defeated John Biorkman 6-0, Yoshi Suzuki, 6-2, and Reza Farokhpay, 6-2.

The Sea Kings swept their doubles sets. Doug Smith and Mike Feyka won, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, Paul Fruchbom and Roberto Intriago won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 and Tyler Stonebreaker and Greg Coleman won, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

Weinstein and Stonebreaker will be paired up to play in the Ojai Tennis Tournament next week as one of the top teams.

In other Sea View League matches:

Irvine 14, Saddleback 7--The No. 1 doubles team of John Manley and Sid Khanijou won their sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 for Irvine, which improved to 6-7, 2-7. Saddleback dropped to 6-7, 3-6.

Newport Harbor 15 1/3, Tustin 5 2/3--Dave Watkins swept at singles, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0, for host Newport Harbor (8-7, 5-4).

University 17, Santa Margarita 4--The singles players swept for University (9-3, 8-1). Robbie Wilkins didn’t lose a game in his 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, effort. Jason Meyers won, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, and Jason Maddox finished, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5. Santa Margarita is 7-6, 5-4.

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 20, Katella 1--Chris Stone swept at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, and Eric Bridwell and Jason Tilan swept at No. 3 doubles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3, to host lead Esperanza (8-7, 4-1).

Los Alamitos 11, Loara 10--Franco Trani and Marco Materazzi swept at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, to lead Los Alamitos (10-2, 4-0).

In the Garden Grove League

Garden Grove 20 Kennedy 1--Sophomores Don Ho and Nam Tran won at No. 3 doubles for visiting Garden Grove, which improved to 12-2, 6-0.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 11 2/3, Western 9 1/3--Playing at No. 3 singles, Brea-Olinda’s Steve Tsai won two of three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6. Brea-Olinda is 10-4, 3-1; Western is 6-6, 3-1.

Valencia 21, Anaheim 0--Eugene Choi swept at No. 3 singles, 5-4, 6-0, 6-4, and Nick Lovric and Jim Chen swept at No. 3 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, default, to lead Valencia (5-7, 2-1).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Brea-Olinda 97, Walnut 73--Casey King won the 100 butterfly (59.72), Jeff Ritter won the 100 freestyle (51.85) and Tad Murphy won the 500 freestyle (5:28.58) to lead Brea-Olinda (8-0).

Villa Park 108, Buena Park 59--Brian Pharris won the 100 free (51.73) and 50 free (23.42) for host Villa Park (7-0).

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Canyon 112, Troy 57--Personal bests by Laurie Osuna in the 100 freestyle (58.8), Nicole Luque in the 200 freestyle (2:16.1) and Pam Harnish in the 100 butterfly (1:17.1) helped lead host Canyon (9-0).

Villa Park 132, Buena Park 37--Tea Lindberg won the 50 free (26.66) and 500 free (5:36.11) for host Villa Park (6-1).
