The Crenshaw High School girls’ basketball team reaffirmed its dominance of the City Section 4-A Division, Roosevelt emerged as a worthy challenger and Washington returned to prominence during the 1993-94 season.

In its first 4-A title game appearance, Roosevelt put the Cougars through two overtimes but Crenshaw held on for its second consecutive City championship.

Washington, which won consecutive 4-A titles from 1989-92, rebounded from a 10-15 season to win a share of the Southern Pacific Conference title and reach the 4-A semifinals under second-year Coach Julie Rousseau.

At the 3-A level, Jefferson advanced to the semifinals for the third season in a row.

Crenshaw, Roosevelt, Washington and Jefferson have each placed two players on the City Times’ Central City first team.

Denise Caudillo of Roosevelt and Kyetra Brown of Jefferson are three-time selections, while Kimberly Howse of Crenshaw was named to the team for the second year in a row.

Here’s a look at the first team:

Kyetra Brown, Jefferson--The 5-foot-6 senior guard was equally effective as a ballhandler and a scorer, averaging 24 points and 13.5 assists. Brown had 70 points in three playoff games, including 29 in a first-round 3-A victory over Poly. She has attracted scholarship interest from UCLA, Arizona and Cal State Long Beach.

Pleshette Burrell, Washington--The 5-3 senior averaged 11 points and 3.5 steals in pacing the Generals to two victories over Crenshaw in Southern Pacific Conference play to clinch a share of the conference title. An All-City 4-A first-team selection, Burrell had a team-high 19 points in an overtime loss to Roosevelt in the 4-A semifinals.

Denise Caudillo, Roosevelt--A three-time All-City selection, the 5-6 senior concluded her career as Roosevelt’s all-time leading scorer with more than 1,200 points and holds the school’s single-game record of 42. The Central League Player of the Year, Caudillo averaged 19.8 points. She scored 83 in four playoff games, including a season-high 30 in the 4-A championship against Crenshaw.

Maricela Gracia, Belmont--An All-City 4-A first-team selection, Gracia helped the Sentinels to the Northern Conference title and an upset victory over North Hollywood in the first round of the 4-A playoffs. The 5-4 senior guard averaged eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Tina Greer, Washington--Her 5-1 stature did little to slow the sophomore playmaker. Greer averaged 12.7 points, four assists and 5.7 steals. A City 4-A first-team pick, Greer poured in 30 points in the championship of the Washington tournament to help the Generals to their second tournament title in three seasons.

Zenobia Tyson-Hunt, Roosevelt--Hunt established herself as one of the premier post players in the City, responding with 23 points and 21 rebounds in the 4-A final. A 4-A first-team selection, the 6-4 junior center averaged 16 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks in guiding the Roughriders to their fourth Southeastern Conference title in six seasons.

Kimberly Howse, Crenshaw--Howse was the major force behind the Cougars’ drive toward their third City girls’ title and fifth appearance in a City final. The 6-0 senior center was selected as the City 4-A Player of the Year and earned All-City honors for the second consecutive season. Howse averaged 21.3 points and 11.1 rebounds. She had 15 points and 17 rebounds in a quarterfinal playoff victory over South Gate and scored 18 points in the 4-A final.

Kristi Lattin, Crenshaw--The 6-0 junior forward-guard averaged 20.1 points and seven rebounds. An All-City 4-A first-team selection and a two-year starter, Lattin scored 18 points in the 4-A final. Lattin sank four three-point baskets in the third quarter of the City title game to help the Cougars overcome a seven-point deficit and had a team-high 22 points in a victory over Peninsula in the first-round of the Southern California State playoffs.

Jackie Leverett, Jefferson--The multifaceted junior led the Democrats in blocked shots at 5.5 a game and also averaged 19 points and nine rebounds. An All-City 3-A first-team selection, the 5-10 guard connected on more than 50% of her shots from the field and 75% from the free-throw line.

Ruby Maciel, South Gate--Accurate from three-point range and able to drive the lane, the 5-9 sophomore scored in double digits in 22 of the Rams’ 23 games. Maciel averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds, earning All-City honors and helping the Rams to their third consecutive berth in the 4-A quarterfinals.
