Erickson Named State’s Player of Year

Nicole Erickson has been named State girls’ basketball player of the year by Cal-Hi Sports. In her four years at Brea-Olinda, Erickson was the point guard for teams that finished a combined 130-5 and won four consecutive State championships.

Mater Dei point guard Miles Simon was named to the boys’ all-state first team. Huntington Beach’s Tony Gonzalez was a second-team selection, and Santa Ana Valley’s Olujimi Mann and Mater Dei’s Schea Cotton made the sixth team. Mann was named sophomore player of the year and Cotton freshman of the year.

Erickson was named to the girls’ all-state first team. Cypress’ Jessica Eggleston and Brea’s Colleen Hudson were third-team selections, and Woodbridge’s Jamie Oenning made the sixth team.

Lisa Hess, a swimmer from Canyon High, has signed a letter of intent to attend Nevada Las Vegas this fall, her father, Jim Hess, said Monday.

Hess, who was Century League swimmer of the year last year and a Southern Section finalist in the 100 butterfly, passed up UC Santa Barbara and Arizona State in favor of UNLV, where she will major in accounting.

Sarah Davis, a guard from Tustin who averaged 12.2 points, has signed a letter of intent to play next season at Long Beach State.

The Orange County All-Star boys’ soccer game will be played at 6 p.m. Saturday at Chapman University. The game’s 33 players will be split into two squads, North and South.
