Concordia Hires Women’s Basketball Coach

Concordia University has hired David Wolter, women’s basketball coach at Valparaiso University, as coach of its women’s program, Concordia announced Tuesday.

Wolter, who was a men’s assistant at UC San Diego, Occidental and Pepperdine from 1984-87, was 90-107 in seven seasons for Valparaiso, a NCAA Division I school in Indiana. The Crusaders were 14-13 last season.

Wolter replaces Sharon Campbell, who resigned after one season coaching the Eagles.

Three high school distance runners have signed letters of intent to attend UC Irvine.

Carrie Burman of San Jose Santa Teresa, Magi Martinez of Vacaville Wood and Kay Nekota of Agoura High will join the Anteater program in the fall.

Nekota finished second in the State cross-country meet the past two seasons. Her top times include 2:20 for 800 meters, 4:40.9 for 1,500 and 10:14 for 3,000. Martinez has placed in the top 10 in the State cross-country meet the last four years. Her top times are 5:00.86 in the mile and 10:52.46 in the 3,200. Burman was 10th in the State high school cross-country championships this season after placing 15th as a junior. Her top time is 5:09.71 in the mile and 11:15 for two miles.

Saddleback College forward Antoine Jefferson has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Cal State Bakersfield.

In two years at Saddleback, he averaged 15.5 points and 9.7 rebounds. He was chosen for the Orange Empire Conference all-star team both seasons.
