CSUN's Heitmann Named Volleyball All-American

The American Volleyball Coaches Assn. named Cal State Northridge middle blocker Oliver Heitmann an NCAA Division I second-team All-American on Thursday.

Heitmann is a 6-foot-7 junior from Hamburg, Germany. Forty players were nominated for the All-American teams. UCLA and Stanford each had three players on the first or second team.

The team was selected by a panel of AVCA coaches.

P.C. Shaw, an assistant baseball coach at Cal State Northridge, will serve as an assistant this summer with the Wausau Woodchucks of the Northwoods League.

Northwoods is a collegiate summer league that uses wood bats. Northridge catcher-outfielder Josh Smaler is expected to play for the team, which is coached by San Jose State assistant Scott Hertler.

Westlake High's Stephanie Salm has committed to play for Harvard. Salm, a 5-foot-9 senior setter, also considered Yale and Northwestern.

The Northridge Open, scheduled to take place Saturday at Cal State Northridge, has been canceled because preliminary work on a new track at Northridge is scheduled to begin this weekend.

Northridge Coach Don Strametz said that athletes who already have registered for the meet are eligible to compete in the Cal Poly Pomona Invitational on Saturday.
