NOTEBOOK / SEAN WATERS : College Drops Baseball Program but Reinstates Men’s Volleyball

Santa Monica College is suspending its baseball program for the 1995 season but will reinstate its men’s volleyball program, Athletic Director Avie Bridges said Monday.

Santa Monica wanted to operate a joint baseball program with West Los Angeles College, which would supply the baseball field and pay for the coach. Santa Monica, which does not have an on-campus field, had planned to pay the remaining 75% of the costs associated with running the program. Those costs, estimated at $15,000, include equipment, transportation and liability insurance.

Bridges said she was told Friday that West L.A. did not have the funds to pay for baseball expenses.

Santa Monica tentatively dropped its men’s volleyball and men’s tennis teams and added women’s soccer in May in an attempt to meet gender-equity requirements. Men’s tennis, however, will not be reinstated, partly because the school’s courts are being used for temporary classrooms.

Ed Aronin, the former Notre Dame Academy girls’ basketball coach, accepted a similar position Tuesday with St. Anthony of Long Beach.

In four seasons, Aronin, 50, led the Regals to a 66-13 record and three appearances in the Southern Section Division IV quarterfinals.
