Four County Players Advance in USTA Event

Four players from Orange County advanced to the singles quarterfinals of the men’s 55 division at the USTA Hardcourt championship Thursday at Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

Herman Ahlers of Dana Point beat David Steckler, 6-3, 6-3; Jim Nelson of Newport Beach beat Russell Bucklin of Mountlake Terrace, Wash., 6-2, 6-1; Bob Duesler of Newport Beach defeated Bob Jones of Irvine, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 and Lenny Lindborg of Laguna Beach beat Rollin O’Dell of Orinda, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5.

In the men’s 50 division: Woody Brooks of Monarch Beach lost to Niesi Sie of Westlake Village, 6-0, 6-4.

Jenny Lee of Fullerton shot a four-over 78 at Torrey Pines and had a five-shot lead after the third round of the Optimist World Junior tournament in San Diego. Lee is competing in girls’ 15-17 division.

In other golf: Alicia Allison of Santa Ana won the National High School tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz.

Allison, who will be a freshman at Duke this fall, had a 54-hole total of 224, and won by seven shots.

Chris Berry of Yorba Linda shot a three-round total of 233 in the boys’ division. He was 15 shots behind T.J. Nance of Stillwater, Okla. who won with a 218.

Bill Boswell is leaving the Westminster High athletic program after 35 years. Boswell won more than 100 games as the school’s varsity football coach from 1959 to 1980.

Since 1980, Boswell has been the district’s athletic director and Westminster High’s sophomore football coach. The school will honor Boswell Aug. 13 at Los Castillos restaurant from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Those interested should contact Joe McGuckin or Anji Clemens at 893-1381. An alumni football game will follow the dinner at 7:30 p.m.

Huntington Beach junior middleweight John (The Fighting Lifeguard) Armijo will co-headline a boxing card July 30 at the Hollywood Palladium. Armijo will fight former WBC champion Rene Arredondo of Apatizingan, Mexico. Armijo came off a year-long layoff in May to knock out Chuck Goossen of North Hollywood in the second round at the Irvine Marriott. Welterweight Mike Walsh (10-0, nine knockouts) of the Westminster Boxing Club will fight on the undercard, which begins at 5 p.m.

John Arata, a 6-foot-5 middle blocker, has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for UC Irvine. Arata was a first-team all conference player at Santa Monica College last season.
