Fountain Valley Spirit Wins National Girls’ Soccer Title
The Fountain Valley Spirit won the U.S. Youth Soccer under-18 girls’ championship Sunday, defeating Connecticut Omni, 2-1, Sunday in Blaine, Minn.
Spirit defender Jillian Lipscomb scored on a 19-yard shot into the right corner 30 seconds after Omni had tied the score, 1-1, in the second half.
Fountain Valley, which finished 63-2, took a 1-0 lead when midfielder Monica Gerado scored on a volley from 12 yards out in the 61st minute.
Connecticut, which won the under-17 title last year, was attempting to become the first team to win consecutive titles.
