Highlights

Irvine won its third consecutive Southern Section title behind the rushing of Tony Mathis and the impressive play of quarterback Mike Phelps, the league’s top two performers at their positions. The Vaqueros still have not lost a league game since joining the Sea View League in 1992; during its 10-game winning streak to finish the season, Irvine survived three close calls, beating Corona del Mar, 23-20, Santa Margarita, 29-26, and Foothill in the Division IV semifinals, 27-24. Another team that beat Foothill was Woodbridge, but despite a 7-3 overall record and a 4-3 league finish, the Warriors took fifth place and missed the playoffs. Santa Margarita lost a nail-biter in the first round of the playoffs, 25-20, to La Verne Damien, ending the high school careers of twins Brian and Brad Finneran, who were all-county performers at wide receiver and defensive back. Corona del Mar won its final three games by an average 36-9 score, but lost its first-round playoff game to Villa Park, 30-28. Then the Sea Kings lost their coach, Dave Holland, who had a 106-92-10 record over two tenures, 1967-75, 1983-93. Holland left to become defensive coordinator at Grossmont College in El Cajon.
