OUTLOOK

No where to go but up. A year ago, people expected great things from the Dolphins. They had, after all, one of the premier quarterbacks in Scott Covington, now at Miami. But Dana Hills flopped. A team ranked among the county’s and Southern Section’s top 10 in the preseason polls, failed to score in its last three games. Now it is up to Deneke, who had a 6-14 record at Encinitas San Dieguito the past two seasons, to pick up the pieces. He doesn’t have a lot to work with. Maynard moves in at quarterback and has shown some ability. He was the team’s punter a year ago and will probably be more vital kicking the ball than throwing it. Deneke would prefer a power game, but doesn’t have the offensive line to pull that off. Expect the Dolphins to showcase Harrison, getting him the ball as much as possible. He was the league’s sprint champion. But Harrison did not play football last season, so he has not been tested by fire. He had better be quick. Brown is the team’s only returning offensive lineman. Howard has size, but is untested. Hein is a quality linebacker, but has little experience around him. All in all, a building season for the Dolphins. But expectations are lower. All they have to be is competitive and that, probably, is attainable. Another 1-9 season wouldn’t be too devastating, a .500 record would be celebrated.
