Highlights

The Times’ lineman of the year, Tony Gonzalez, led Huntington Beach to its first Southern Section title game since 1935, but the Oilers lost to Los Alamitos, 39-21. Gonzalez led the Oilers in touchdowns, tackles and receptions, and he earned a scholarship to play football and basketball at California. Edison finished second in league, losing, 10-7, to Huntington Beach in the league opener. The Chargers got a boost when running back Michael Graham transferred from Mater Dei at midseason, but Los Alamitos eliminated Edison in the Division II quarterfinals, 34-8. Fountain Valley finished third in league and narrowly lost to Huntington Beach, 14-10. The Barons were also eliminated by Los Alamitos, 42-21, in the playoff semifinals. Although Fountain Valley boasted future Division I college players quarterback Scott Bertoni (Nevada) and offensive lineman Ken Foersch (Fresno State), Edison defeated Fountain Valley, 27-14, to win the victory bell game. Graham rushed for 189 yards and two touchdowns in a matchup marred by a postgame melee. With an offense led by quarterback Travis Anderson and a defense led by safety Tom Keim, Marina finished fourth in the league by defeating Ocean View, Santa Ana, Servite and Westminster.
