FAST FACT

Woodlief played linebacker for a 9-0-1 Memphis State team in 1963 that was denied a bowl bid. He went on to play for the Rams from 1965-69.

OUTLOOK

The Guards have the potential to flatten opponents on the line of scrimmage with eight linemen weighing 200 pounds or more. But only two of those players have varsity experience. Quarterback Szeptycki, who passed for an average of only 65 yards per game last year, might be more active with Matekel emerging as a good receiver. Jackson and Pawlik combined for more than 1,400 rushing yards last year.

OUTLOOK

The Valiants had four consecutive last-place finishes before their dramatic 1993 turnaround. Seven starters return from that team, five of them playing both ways. They should contend for the 1994 title, but it won’t be an easy road. With former Coach Richard Fong leaving the program last spring and Trovatten not arriving until June 20, many players showed up for two-a-day workouts out of shape.
